Great game, but destined for cult status.

I can honestly admit that when I bought this game, I was not expecting the masterpiece in the box. This game surprises in every way possible. The story is deranged, but extremely enjoyable. The graphics are very smooth, but very stylized, speaking only to certain tastes. The voiceovers are... questionable, but not BAD.
Going into more detail, I'll start with gameplay. The on-rails movement will break the deal with some gamers. I'll say it again: You hold the A button, and you move on a track. Got it? Okay, if you can get past that, you'll probably enjoy the rest of the game.
The collection of blood for upgrading or healing your characters is quite fun, and the feeling of terror never quite lets up. You never know when there's a creature breathing down your neck. Then you hear him laugh. That's when you go crazy trying to find him. The gun controls are easy to use, and each character definitely feels different.
The graphics are crisp and smooth. The character models are detailed, and the environments are quite bizarre and polished. Then again, I love cel shading, and absolutely adore the stylized look of this game. It won't speak for all, but it speaks for me.
The sound of this game is perhaps the best aspect. Every level feels quite different, not because of the designs necessarily, but because of the music. Although the music may be a techno-rock hybrid, in no way does it insult the game. It even adds a depth of ambiance. The hysterical laughter of the Heaven Smile still haunt my dreams, as they aren't done to scare, but they're supposed to blend into the levels. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they cut directly into your mind. Everything about this game's sound is done perfectly.
The lifespan of this game is pretty short, as the game is pretty short. However, if you mix unlockable difficulty with secret characters and insane difficulty, you'll keep hardcore gamers distracted for some time. This game is still the game I recommend first to any hardcore gamer, and it doesn't get the attention it deserves. If you haven't experienced this gem yet, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. Trust me.
