Great, though could use a bit more substance.

Don't get me wrong, this is one of the best games I have ever played, but super smash bros melee isn't perfect. You should notice this the first time you play it. The multi-player mode is incredible, in fact it's probably the best multiplayer game on the gamecube. But, look at the single-player mode! Doing the same thing over and over again with different characters to get trophies leaves a little to be desired.
The gameplay for this is incredible, it's the only thing that makes you not fall asleep when you play the tedious single-player. The button combos are easy to pull off in a pinch, and make for constant action. The unique moves of each character and how they integrate themselves into the game make for quite a bit of fun.
But as I said before, everything in this game outdoes the single-player mode's lifespan. All there is to do in this game is do the target tests, the classic, adventure, and all-star modes (with every character), all of the missions, and unlock each character. No, it does NOT sound fun. The missions, though fun, are limited in number, the target tests are one-time things, doing the classic, adventure and all-star modes with each character is INCREDIBLY tedious, and unlocking the characters usually involves playing the multiplayer for large amounts of time, or completing one of the missions. Let me tell you, unlocking the characters isn't really worth it, because most of them are clones, which means they have the same moves as another character you probably already have.
The graphics on the other hand are absolutely incredible, seeing as this game is for the gamecube. They are smooth, the colors are wonderful, and some of the landscapes in this game look like they belong in a PS3 game. Especially the background of zebes.
Now, the sound here was a piece of work. They took audio from all the games they got characters from, re-did it and put it in. They replaced the old, nasty music from the NES ice climbers with actual music, re-did the earthbound theme, and used an orchestra to record the smash bros theme.
All in all, this is an incredible game. Even though the single-player mode isn't great, the greatness of the rest of the game makes up for it, and that this IS the best game that was ever released on the gamecube.
