Snaking removed from Mario Kart Wii

Snaking removed from Mario Kart Wii

A snippet from the UK's Official Nintendo Magazine claims that snaking has been removed from Mario Kart Wii.

Snaking, officially called "Mini-Turbo", is where racers waggle back and forth during a drift for a significant boost in speed. Its usage has players split firmly into two camps, some saying it's a glitch that ruins the game, others claiming it's a skillful technique to be mastered.

"The second big difference is the removal of snaking. Ever since the N64, practically every Mario Kart game has included the ability to get a speed boost by waggling the controls left and right as you powerslide. This has finally been scrapped. Now your speed boost is determined by how long you can hold the slide".

Note that ONM has a reputation for being wrong, so this news isn't exactly set in concrete.

I read that in the mag and thought it was good news.

NO! This is one of my favorite things in the series!

This was said ages ago and ONM have played and reviewed the game so they would know whether there is any snaking. There is definitely no snaking.

No, I actually think this is right. I watched a gameplay video and I'm pretty sure I saw sliding, not snaking.

I heard stunts give you boosts of the same standard, so there'd be no need for snaking anyway.

Snake? Snake!? Snaaaaaaaaake.

I'd say ONM have a 95% accuracy in truth, but only with the games they haven't played, or that's had little info on them. Games they have played and ones they interview the people are almost 100% accurate.

Never heard of it anyway so it won't make a difference to me.

Actually, I have the mag and later on it mentions that it is only totally impractical, it hasn't been removed completely. Can someone back me up please.

Don't really matter to me, but it kind of sounds like an improvement. Plus I read that tricks you perform boost your speed anyways.

Wait wait wait. Powersliding hasn't been removed, how you do it has changed. Now if you hold a slide long enough (no waggling back and forth), you get the extra boost. Snaking is where, on a long straight stretch, you repeatedly powerboost by turning one way and then the other. The reviews I've read said they didn't get enough speed from powerboosting (it takes too long to build up now) to compensate for not going straight- rendering snaking useless, not impossible.

Sometimes when I race someone on Wi-Fi in Mario Kart DS, they never stop Snaking just to win.

Yes, snaking made it too easy. That's what made SNES mario kart good, you actually worked, same with 64, same with Gameboy, but then after Double Dash people got lazy.

Oh thank god. In Mario Kart DS, if you don't snake, you lose. Now I don't need to worry about breaking my controller.

Am a master at this in Mario Kart DS. I hope it's not true. Time trials will suck without it.

If it's actually removed, racers rely more on racing skill, not how fast they can hit a combination of buttons. I'm all for it, being guilty of snaking myself. What needs to be eliminated now is the ability to hack the game and have people traveling at light speeds.

I have just checked the mag and on page 61-62 it says that it's just a simple hop and slide. So you can't snake like in the other games.

Oh. Here I thought Metal Gear solid was coming to Mario Kart. Damn.

The original mario kart was awesome and didn't use snaking. Although I like it both ways, it'll make it more fun for everyone to get rid of snaking and even the playing field for those who don't play it enough to get the hang of it.

They said the wii's picture format would 720, but it's 480.

Without it the race will be even, the boost depends on how long you can hold the drift, I like it, (explains how I always lost in the DS version).

Snaking? I just called it super special awesome drift boost to get ahead of computers or SSADBTGAOC.

I've got that magazine. I've also pre-ordered the game, and I live in uk, so there's 11 days until its delivered to me and I'm glad there's going to be no assholes snaking all the time.

I hope it's in, it was the best thing about the game, gave you an edge.

They probably took it out because it would be too hard to do on the Wii wheel.

Only amateurs/beginners/losers use snaking instead of just racing. It's a lousy cheat that deserves to come out. Besides, items should win you the race anyhow, depending on how you use 'em (how 'bout those mushrooms!?).

Nintendoof: 'Super special awesome'? is that a reference from Yu-Gi-Oh the Abridged Series (a great spoof of Yu-Gi-Oh that everyone should watch)?

Avatar

some guy said:

Snaking is not cheating and it's not for amateurs/beginners/losers. In fact most snakers KNOW the basics so we can still win even if snaking is taken out. You scrubs have to quit whining and do what is necessary to win.

I've got the game. You can actually snake by holding B on the corners for AGES then you get a boost. If you're using a kart after even longer you get a red boost.

I am trying to learn how to snake on the DS, but I am a complete failure. I can't do it. On the Wii, I always use a bike and just get the turbos around corners, and do wheelies on the straight parts, which is usually faster than snaking. I almost always win on Wii but never win on DS. Does anyone know a good tutorial on how to snake?
