Nintendo Wii

The Wii had without question the best presentation of the 3 next-gen consoles. Nintendo are still hanging onto a few details regarding release dates and pricing, but they did state it would be available in the fourth quarter of 2006 and it would be cheaper than its rivals.

The new Zelda game Twilight Princess featured heavily in the presentation and it looks great. It was revealed that the Wii controller has a speaker to offer depth of sound, something none of the other consoles have. For example when you're firing arrows in the Zelda game you'll hear the bow string tighten on the controller's speaker, then as it flies through the air the sound will transfer over to the tv speakers. Very impressive.

It turns out that the nunchuk you hold in your left hand also has motion sensors of its own, independent of the wiimote. The developers of Red Steel describe this as having both of your hands in the game.

Playstation 3

Wouldn't you know it, Sony 'borrowed' Nintendo's idea for the motion sensor in the controller. A good idea is a good idea, but this smacks of desperation. Their implementation of it is less powerful than the Wii's and they've had to sacrifice force feedback. Another surprise about the controller is its shape. Ditching the boomerang design that was unveiled at last year's E3, Sony have wisely reverted to a more standard PS2 shape. Despite these surprises Sony's presentation was still relatively uninteresting, a large portion of it harping on about how well the PS2 has sold and how 'cool' the PSP is.

A few of the third party titles looked good in the brief clips, games such as Coded Arms: Assault and Gundam: Mobile Unit. Another title that looked really cool was the card game for eyetoy called The Eye Of Judgement, where you place real cards on a flat surface under the eyetoy and monsters spawn on screen. Who knows whether it's as fun as it looks, but it could be the Pokemon of the future!

The final bummer was the announcement of the pricing. The good version of the PS3 will cost an offputting $599 in the USA, worse still for europeans it will be considerably more at 599 Euros. Yikes!

I was watching some E3 clips and it looks as if Wii stole the show. I would say the line span time was more than 6 hours at the end. I was suprised at how well the games look, since all the rumors I heard said the graphics would be very down to par. Anyway, my favorite wii games so far are Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy and Red Steel. My favorite 360 game is Bioshock so far, and for PS3 it has to be Metal Gear 4.

I don't care if the graphics aren't as advanced, it's still supposed to be 2 or 3 times more powerful than gamecube. Also it won't cost $600 and will actually be fun to play.

Sony showed off their new controller function by showing the crowd a model of a rubber duck in a bath tub. A very poor decision on their part showing off "their" new idea. I would certainly never pay for a $600 copied controller, rubber duck machine. Nice try Sony, but you're going to need more than that to take the Wii down.

Sony made public fools of themselves, their showing was very poor and HEAVY with FMV. I've not seen any graphics on 360/ps3 the Wii can't handle - true HD. Sony's GBA tilt sensor was the biggest joke of the show, how can anyone fanboy this pathetic company?

I Really hope Nintendo kind of wins the next gen battle. Winning means that they rise profits at all. I love nintendo and I am still afraid they are going under like Sega. It is a shame that Nintendo always has the innovative ideas (not only the new controller, there was the rumble pack, if anyone remembers shipped with Lylat wars n64), and the analog stick (n64) and Sony and MS always simply copy their stuff. Even worse Sony always tries to make it "better" like dual-shock, or two analog sticks. Nobody appreciates Nintendo's innovative and creative work. Like I said it's a shame that the only developer who brings new life into this business has the crappiest success.

Why did you get a Samsung? You should have got an LG as they support either xd engine or xd engine 2 and this upscales 480p to a near perfect 720p. PRESTO wii has HD for FREE.

You guys are all complaining about a $600 price tag on the ps3 but you just haven't quite realized what comes with it. 60GB hard drive (3x as big as 360, and I don't even know if wii HAS a hdd.). Also a blu-ray player, that makes it worth it right there. A standalone blu-ray player is $1000. Oh right, the motion sensor idea. None of it was nintendo's idea. Sure they were the first to implement it into console gaming, but motion sense technology was used a long time ago in PC games and there are already 3D space mice for computers out there.

I just found out that Game On, a yearly event at the Seattle Science Museum is this week. Two years ago I got to try out Donkey Konga, this year maybe the Wii! If not, this summer I'm attending a game programming camp at Digipen. For those of you who subscribe to Nintendo Power, there's usually an ad for it in there. Nintendo is rockin with this new console, Sony just did a bad job of copying the wii controller with their non-playable version of it. I'm getting the wii and so are my mates. People will still buy the ps3 but more will buy the wii. Graphics are better on ps3 though, even though I don't care about graphics wii has a class game (RED STEEL). Also Zelda, Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros Brawl. So everyone, wii and nintendo are the best.

Actually, a 10-20GB hard drive wouldn't cost an extra $50 to manufacture, so they could make some extra profit by selling it for $250 w/ a 10-20GB hard drive.

Another thing that could boost the Wii's sales are the launch titles. In days past, whenever a new nintendo system came out, gamers had to wait a few years for the good games like Zelda (this is what probably hurt the gamecube the most). But when the Wii comes out, there will be a Zelda title at the launch! Sah-weet!

It's being reported that Sega are remaking Shenmue into one big epic saga (shenmue 1 & 2 and the other 12 chapters they never got around to doing). If they designed this for the Wiimote, could be the greatest game of ALL TIME. No I am not kidding!

The ability to use a wiimote as a sword or a hand etc in an interactive environment is amazing. Anyone remember the movie 'The Lawnmower Man'? That's what Nintendo is bringing us.

Well, in my opinion the following will happen: Lots of the good 3rd party developers will flock to the Wii. The PS3 will do ok at first, but will be as lackluster as the gamecube in sales due to the high price and eventual loss of 3rd party developers and such. The Xbox 360 will still be able to get a lot of sales due to HALO 3 and other good games, but still will fall behind the shadow of the Wii. The Xbox 360 will have technical problems and the PS3 will have minor ones. The Wii will have problems with the motion controller under halogen lighting with the first 10,000 or so units. Some 3rd party developers will be slow to the new kind of gaming and thus mess up a little on new games. The virtual console idea will revive a whole bunch of old school gamers out there (8-bit forever!). The motion controller of the Wii will be SUPER quick to popularity in shooting and sword games (to large types of games). So in the end, the Wii will be at the top but there will still be some competition before it towers abover the rest as I believe it will quite quickly. I hope I did this fairly and don't sound like the nintendo fanboy I am :D.

Sony won't come back with anything, they are struggling for ideas. They haven't even come up with a new concept for a console, they just stick to the playstation. If you compare the graphics from the old consoles such as the Xbox, Ps2 and the Gamecube I'd have to say the Playstation came in last place. The design of the games and pretty much everything was never as good as the others.

I have all the systems, ps2, gamecube and xbox. All around I am very disappointed with the ps3. Sure the graphics will be great but 600 bucks for a few extra high def pics are surely not worth it. The 360 I think is doing a great job and it has a pretty decent price range but truthfully I give my vote to the nintendo wii. Great games, great control (thanks to the new remote) and a really great price of 250 bucks makes the wii #1 in my book.

I always have faith in Nintendo and I am sure they will finally get what they deserve once more, domination in the gaming world. Microsoft and Sony are doing the same damn thing we have been doing for the past 20 years and agreeing with Nintendo, it gets boring. Wii's concept of playing is believing I wholely agree with. Now I haven't played the wii but I plan to own one and the ability to play TG16 and Genesis on there is all the more reason to pick this up. The Wii shows what Nintendo can do and it is very "revolutionary". I have talked to two friends that had the ability to go to e3 and they said this: "Ps3 looks ok but it's the same ol crap, so it wears off after 30 mins of play" and then the wii response from them was "Wii is fun as hell, it's nice to see something that I can play and enjoy for a long period of time and not get bored, GO NINTENDO". I shed a tear in seeing Nintendo getting the success it deserves. I just hope all of it comes into play this November.

To the people who want to know about hard drives, it has 2 ports used for mass storage devices that are bought seperatly to store the good old classics. Also ps3 will kick ass because of Killzone but I do think 420? for 1 game and ps3 is way too much. You can buy small cars for that, then the wii 150? with 30-40 per game means you can get loads.

Plok, the reason that the Xbox wasn't profitable is because Microsoft can afford it. They just happen to make the most popular OS in the world, Windows, not to mention Office. The reason that they come up with a loss on the Xbox 360 is because they pour a ton of money into marketing the system. That's why I like Nintendo, they focus on just making systems and games they hope everyone will enjoy. Why do you think the Gamecube was the only system not able to play movie DVDs or music CDs?

To be quite honest I think the differences in graphics between the 3 next gen consoles are going to be very few. Overall the consoles are built after the 512 mgbit standard which will allow them to run almost the same graphics depending on how big the built in processor are and which type they are. The only noticable difference between the consoles will be because of their ability to show a certain amount of pixels (pixel rate). Sony playstation 3 will be able to show more details because of that, but the graphics between the consoles will nevertheless stay the same. After all I hope you do remember the last console war, there was really no visual difference in graphic quality.

PS2 may have won the console battle last time but Nintendo Wii will definitely win this one, followed by xb360. PS3 is way too expensive and will get boring after a few weeks, whereas with the Wii there is always something new. Thank god for Nintendo!

As many of you have already said, I sure am glad Nintendo is finally coming back to the top after all these years. The NES is the last time they truly dominated in the gaming industry. Everyone always went for the playstation, though I believe the n64 was better. Then when the gamecube came around, they REALLY got overshadowed by the playstation 2 and the Xbox. But now after so many years, Nintendo fought its way back to the top, and what is really amazing, they did it without changing tactics. They never resorted to making nothing but violent games and sports games. They kept with what they were doing and what's more, they never gave up on their idea of being innovative. They could have conformed to the ps2 / xbox and used the same old controller and the same old system, but they didn't! Go Nintendo, Go Wii, Go Metroid Prime Corruption! Whoa, where did that last one come from?

I have always had the belief in nintendo, they have inovated from the start and the rest has just copied. They have thrilled me throughout my gaming life whilst the others have slightly interested me for half an hour then sent me to sleep. Nintendo have directed console gaming to where it is now and will continue to take it to new heights. Who cares about graphics when the gameplay is phat. I can garantee that zelda tp on the gamecube will be better than any next gen game that ms or sony can come up with and how long did you play goldeneye for after it came out. I still play it now. Wii to the future, in nintendo we trust.

I really think the wii will do very well. Every time that I play on my gamecube now I get more and more bored by the old style control method, and I find myself thinking that wouldn't it be better if you could just properly aim instead of using a control stick? Also, because most gamers prefer the "fps" genre and wii is perfect for it, wii will dominate!

Phoenix, you're one of those stupid people who go on other forms to TRY to prove us wrong. Personally I don't even know what a blue ray thingy is! Believe me I havent heard of this wachyamicall it until now. You know how sony screwed up? (wait they did that when they formed the company) with their controller? It only has the motion sensor? Then look at the Wii's, it's got a power button for when you wake up in bed and don't feel like getting up off your ass to turn the power on, led lighted buttons, THE BEST motion sensor, a new shape & style, speaker (not microphone) and an add on usb port. They even might have a camera like those camphones. Now that is what I call sweetness!

Ja-Mez, of course Wii would come out in Australia. The starting price in America is said to be ranged from 150-250 dollars, that is AU$200-333. However I get the feeling it will be slightly more expensive than that here. But with all that said, the other 2 consoles are much more expensive so I'd stick with Wii if it's prices you are worried about :).

I don't think it does, but it will probably be available packed with whatever game you'll need it for, so that you don't have to pay for anything you don't need. Unlike what Sony and MS are doing with their consoles.

Trust me, like the legend of zelda games were the biggest RPG games in the world and super smash bros made a hit. How could anyone doubt the wii? Unlike microsoft n sony, nintendo actually make their buyers feel the gaming experience. That's why we enjoy it so much. That's something microsoft n sony dont give us, they give us all the standard crap n bull so they can make money outta them. But Wii will crush them into dust n put em back in the hole they crawled out from because they have copied Nintendo for way too long.

I'm so excited for the Wii. I can actually AFFORD it, the controller is amazing. Well, my prediction is a lot of companies who before exclusively published on the Playstation will come back to Nintendo. It's the only way they'll be able to be innovative and take risks. It costs too much to make games for the PS3 for there to be anything but the tried (tired) and true. That's right, they'll just have FF, driving games, sports and fps. How lame. Thank God for Nintendo.

Sony are just money hungry suits that don't care for the future of gaming. All they are concerned about are profits, that's why they are in league with numpties like EA. Whereas Nintendo have always been there for us players creating games that play well and are affordable. I can't wait for the wii, people are getting all freaked out by the controller but they forget Nintendo gave us the standard style of controller when they released the snes all those years ago! I think that wii is going to raise the bar and open up games in a whole new way. Think about it, you can actually swing Link's sword and cut down hoards of angry weird thingy mu jigs and that to me sounds dope. Big up Nintendo and the people leaving posts. The Wii might just be the fate of Nintendo. Games will sooner grasp the hand of a dual analog controller than what appears to be the tube clicker. The Wii has a great visual box, lots of color. But maybe the new generation should have a hard based "grown up" appearance, and a few more M rated titles. But for now all we can do is wait and see. GOOD LUCK NINTENDO!

Kweh, one of the things that keeps Nintendo going is the LACK of M rated games. They keep the younger audience with EC and E, and when they do an M game they make it really, really good. Perfect balance.

Yeah, I'm older than most gamers and I hate most rated M Games. The stuff that makes the game rated M is usually not needed for the story. But now game developers think that they can have a bad story and gameplay if they put in enough Strong Language, disturbing images and lifelike animated violence. Microsoft, Nintendo AND Sony were all sued by a company for use of their copywritten rumble feature. Sony was just the one that didn't pay for rights and can't use it. MS and Nintendo did so they do have rumble. Games are MUCH funner over the net. Blue ray means more HD content and larger campaign/maps/weapons. I'm not a PS3 or Nintendo man, I am a proud owner of the Xbox 360, the gaming is amazing. If Xbox and Sony teamed up, Nintendo would be the new Atari if you catch my drift. Only good part about Wii will be the downloads of SNES games. But hell, I like my roms all the same.

The Wii is not a thing of beauty, brilliance or anything of the sort. Nintendo is all about being 'new', that doesn't meen good. In fact I think Nintendo has gone terribly downhill since the 64. N64 was awesome good fun. The gamecube was alright, redeemed by Mario Party etc. They even put Zelda (previously my favourite game) into a poor perspective and poor plot. In my opinion using the controllers for the Wii will require space, tolerance and the want / Need to look like an idiot whilst playing a games console (which I need remind is about simulation and the fact of not using energy whilst playing). I'm no fan boy and yes the PS3 price is way over the top and I wouldn't look at an advert for buying it at over $700. But I believe the Gamecube will be limited and get owned by the PS3 (because it's popular for no reason) and the xbox due to game quality. Although I think the Wii has value for money and will be a fun party console.

The important thing is that Zelda and Mario both rule and will dominate when they launch with the Wii, along with Metroid Prime 3. By the way kahfkdahk it was just the demo where the shooting was blocky. The final version will have the controls tweaked and have settings where you can change the pointers sensitivity. The new gameinformer mag said Microsoft won best of show which is crap, Wii won.

So have I, but personally from what I've seen I still think wii will be the best of the three. Now to "zelda_is_#1", are you trying to say that ocarina of time will be the best game to ever come out? Because that doesn't give much room for improvement for future games. Although ocarina of time was a great game, you never know when another game will come out that could be just as good, or possibly better. I think that TP will be just as good, firstly because it's set in the same time and place as OoT. Secondly this game is 8 years newer, so a lot of things would have improved - camera movement, gameplay, ease, graphics etc.

Let's grow up a bit children. The Wii does rock, although I'm going to hold out a bit on just how much it DOES rock until I experience the finished hardware for myself. I really don't want to see XBox and Gamecube looking graphics on the Wii. Revolutionary controller or not, those graphics better rock. Whether Nintendo says it's important or not, it is important or hasn't anyone been paying attention to the 360's second wave games. Graphics and gameplay usually go hand in hand. Moving away from that, I don't think that Nintendo is going to release Super Mario Galaxy as a launch title. Not just because it isn't finished but because they already have some heavy hitters like Red Steel, Metroid (awesome) Prime and the best Legend of Zelda yet, Twilight Princess at launch. Two triple A titles and a potential triple A is enough for now and Ninty maybe thinking the same thing. One thing Nintendo doesn't do is rain on its own parade and releasing all three triple A titles may affect maximum sales of each. It's more likely that Mario Galaxy will be released around Valentines or Easter 2007 respectively. Either way, I think Nintendo are starting to relearn how to cater for the casual and the hardcore, as they did in the SNES days and then some! Both DS and Wii are poised to outsell the GBA and Gamecube comfortably so watch this space.

I think TP has a great chance of being the best Zelda game. It's headed by Aonuma who created Majora's Mask. Though many don't give credit to this game, it was the strangest and darkest Zelda game yet. Besides that the mini-games and side plots in Majora's Mask were great (especially the bomber notebook). If we get the same creativity in this installment plus the great dungeons and fighting (which has already been confirmed as awesome) TP could easily be the best Zelda game.

Zelda_is_#1 doesn't know what he's talking about, OoC is my favorite game TO DATE. TP seems to be taking a similar route as OoC in how the graphics play out, and sword play, along with content. Plus, you can't say that it has a 1 in a 1000 chance to get a perfect score. Games aren't rated on chance, they are rated on how well they are made, look, feel and play. The only reason I see TP not getting a 10 is because it's not the new thing, OoC was the new thing when it came out in its full 3d goodness. Now that's a thing of the past, so that puts TP at a disadvantage. But anywho the Wii will rock, I'm already saving up for one. I pity the fool who doesn't buy a wii! Ever since I was 2 I've been playing nintendo games. Hard to believe but my sister's friend let me play the NES Super Mario Bros and my sis says I was pretty good at it. Now I'm 12 turning 13 and I might get Red Steel or the Twilight Princess on my birthday November 8th. Well, Nintendo announced all of their first party games will be 50 dollars. However, they can't control the price of 3rd party games, so 3rd party games could easily go to 60 dollars. But hopefully they will take Nintendo's lead and just keep it at 50.

Well ps3 didn't really do a good job of copying the wii features because all it can do is tell if it's being tilted. Whereas the wiimote can tell if it's being tilted, how close it is to the tv and its relative location to the tv. They mainly threw it in to say "we have it too", but they really don't. As far as what Hey said, I completely agree and went through the exact same thing he said, except for hating it at e3, I loved it.

I'm all about the Wii, but I still intend to get a ps3 and a 360. I like all the systems. Plus, PS3 plans on banking on not being a gaming machine, but a cheap Blu Ray disk player. You want some reasons why your sister needs to buy a Wii instead of a PS3? One, the Wii will be at the most 250 dollars with each first-party game costing 50 dollars, while the PS3 will be 500-600 dollars with games that will probably be more expensive. She'll save money. Two, the PS3 controller does have a motion-sensing chip but it only detects the tilt of the controller, the wiimote can detect not only the tilt but also where it is. Three, Nintendo has been known since the 80's for producing some of the best games of all time, the Wii will have include Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, a new Warioware game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem and four new franchises. The PS3 will also have many games but the only one I think is worth looking at are the Square-Enix games. Four, the wii will not only be able to play Gamecube game discs, but will also have a virtual emulator that can play NES, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis and Turbografx 16 games available for a small price via download. That means that all your favorite old nintendo games that are hard to find or really expensive elsewhere will be available to download for everyone for a small price for each game. The PS3 will be backwards compatible with PS and PS2 games but some of these games are hard to find and really expensive on online auctions, such as Final Fantasy Chronicles which includes Chrono Trigger. And Four, Nintendo has already set up an easy to access wi-fi gaming network for the Nintendo DS that is completely free, so I see no reason that the online gaming will have a subscription fee to go along with it. But the way PS3 is going, a subscription fee to play online with some of Sony's games is most likely (just to let you know, the online gaming system for the Xbox game systems, Xbox live, has a subscription fee). So Wii thing, I hope this is enough reasons for your sister to buy a Wii.

Like Metal Gear Solid 4, or Warhawk, but I haven't taken the time to look at any other titles (I've also got this funny feeling that if they were to make a Final Fantasy VII remake for the PS3, it would sell like hotcakes). Sony on the other hand are more all rounders making tvs, cameras, mp3 and dvd players and stereos. They would never join because of that, there is too much competition between them. Nintendo may be competing against them for who has the best console in the 3rd gen series but they are neutral to Sony and MS because all they do is make games and consoles, not really anything else. No offence, I'm a huge Nintendo fan myself and I've played all the consoles that are out now. I still think out of the 2nd gen Gamecube is the best followed by xbox. In the old series still the N64 because of its creativity in games but now the Wii is the best for sure and I think if one of them would ally themselves it would be Microsoft and Nintendo because of Microsoft's computer expertise and Nintendo's gaming advantages. That would be an excellent combo. Anyway the launch games I want to get are Metroid prime 3 and TP.

No, Wii uses 12cm discs which are too big to fit. Besides that, the Wii is a more powerful machine and the Gamecube wouldn't be able to handle some of the games. And Nintendo actually want people to buy the Wii, not stick with their Gamecubes.

Look at the bright side, most of us have waited over a year so far and there's only 2-4 more months to go. I just hope they make LoZTP challenging because WW was a joke, MM was probably the most frustrating game to play. MP3 kind of reminds me of Halo (the way everything is textured and set up), but the fact that you have to use both your hands is quite innovative. I've been waiting for them to put supermoves in Smash bros, apparently every character will have a Super move that they can pull off in SSBB and I can wait another 6 months for it, it's not that long. As for third party members, I'm surprised no one's giving any credit to Sega, I mean they're still running strong. I've always been a Nintendo fan but I loved the Sonic series, especially S&K3. Square Enix is Making FFCC for the Wii and if you played the one for GC you know how much fun it can be. Anyway to sum it up, Wii Rules, PS3 good graphics nothing new, and 360 = Microsoft = Viruses, hacks, blue screen of death and other misc problems.

I hope eventually they will bring out a new Mario Kart game because Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart Double Dash ruled. I've also realised something, maybe xbox has to get repaired after a while because of the hard drive. Out of all my mates only one owns a NGC and the rest an xbox or PS2 and all of them had to go into repairs. Maybe it's because of the hard drive because when my mates got them back all their memory was deleted. Either they fixed it or they just trashed the original and gave em a new one.

Back at last! All vacations are over and now I can spend some actual time on this site. Let's see the recent news. I personally think music and (not as much) movies on the Wii would be stupid. I mean, you bought it to play games right? Not movies and other crap. I agree with tabsina, not to mention the discs are supposed to be too big anyways. As for a release date for the Wii, I think it will be around late October/early November, as that's the general time the release games are slated for. All I know for sure is that it's going to be before the American Thanksgiving. In other news, my Gamecube died (got a $50 replacement though) and the hinge on my DS broke (still works though). Sadly, when I went on the Nintendo tour during my Digipen summer workshop, they had nothing about the Wii except the Wii video you can find online.

I own a GC and a ps2, and I am saving up for the wii now. Some things I've heard are that the graphics on the Wii at e3 weren't the real thing and the actual graphics will be a lot better (the wii on display was just a plastic box with a blue light on it and there was a modified gamecube hidden doing the actual work). Other than that, the virtual console will probably work like iTunes, where you pay a small amount and you download the game to your wii. After I buy the wii, I will most likley buy the 360 after halo 3 when it goes down as those 2 will own the market (wii60). Current wii funds: $51.

Yea that's true I was just wondering because people have been saying a lot of different things about SSBB and its release date. Mr Coffee you have a point, at E3 maybe we didn't see the true power of the wii maybe we only saw like half of it. Even though they said its graphics won't stand up to xbox360 and PS3 but maybe there was something else at play. The Wii should be compatible with a regular USB hard drive or jump drive. It's like getting a 2GB memory card for the same price as a sony memory card. What will be even better is if the wii is compatible with regular USB HDs (e.g 200GB) it can hold mp3s, videos, plugins etc. That would make it better than xbox360 and PS3's already outdated "floppy drives". Anyway, the wii is made for GAMES not stuff that you can do an a computer that you ALREADY HAVE! The BLU RAY is new technology and I'm very sure that its extremely volatile and SLOW. Like it or not, it is likely that MS WILL remake the 360 with HDDVD depending on the response of the upcoming drive. The ps3 is tempting to buy on the first day, but remember the EMOTION ENGINE in the PS2, WOW! And now CELL is just a high end multicore processor, found in your cpu. What's with the overheating consoles? Well at least the ps3 will double as a BBQgrill. Yeah I'm bashing PS3 anyway, back to the wii. I'm glad that the wii is bringing a breath of fresh air to gaming. Everyone must agree that if it were up to Sony an M$ we will be playing sequels upon sequels upon sequels on the exact same interface. I'm still gong to buy a PS3 but if they work out the bugs and overheating issues they WILL have. I will be first in line for my wii knowing that it will work when I buy it. Time for me to go off on the controls. Xbox360 = same old stuff. Ps3 = "6 degrees of freedom", cheap attempt to "innovate" the dual shock. Think about it, how many genres of games can really utilize that? Warhawk and. YEAH thought so. Driving games, FPS, RPGs. How the heck will they be able to TRULY make use of it. Of course they will implement it in minigames but that is CHEAP. Now for the kick in the nuts. NO VIBRATION. Actually, in ps2 (both old and slim) the vibration does not work properly. I have tried everything and I'm convinced that it's the build quality of Sony's products. The big N on the other hand has vibration in the wii-mote and being that it's new tech, that's impressive. Even the GCN controller can take a beating, even though the layout sucks. I think that the nunchuck has a motor too, if so, then that would be a nice touch. The wii is really going to add some much needed dimension to video games and test developers' creative muscle.

A lot of people are saying wii's graphics are not going to be great, that they're not even that much a step above the GC graphics. But in a recent article ATi said that what we saw at e3 was just the tip of the iceberg and we will eventually see more. Well I believe them because everyone go and watch Disaster: Day of crisis, it has great footage and the graphics on this game look awesome, looking like that of killzone on the ps3. Wii will be great. Wii will rise over our enemies, Wii will be as one, and at the end Wii shall stand tall in domination over all competition!

That Day of Crisis trailer is probably a CG pre-rendered movie, but I have no doubt Wii is still going to have some gorgeous games. ATI is a graphics leader after all, and it is true that they said what we've seen is only the tip of the iceberg. Maybe textures won't get VASTLY improved, but shaders and different "mapping" techniques can still make games look beautiful. I remember rumors long ago that Wii might support displacement mapping to add a lot of detail to its games, but that's a pretty high-end trick. Though Parallax Mapping is probably not out of order here.

Graphics don't really matter, to some extent. Goldeneye 64 didn't have the best graphics at the time, and look it was probably the most played console multiplayer in history next to Mario Kart. A bad game in HD is guess what? A bad game. The only time you really think about HD and details is when you just WATCH the game, not PLAY it. Yeah HD is nice but I applaud big N for leaving out HD. That doesn't mean that 8-bit Mario should make a comeback, but the bottom line is that graphics are just an alternate means of attracting people without controllers in their hands. Wii? Even Nintendo256 sounds appealing.

I live in Australia and so far I have only found one site about the wii with its price and specs! Still that site is really outdated. If anyone has any info on Australian release and prices, then can you please write about it? I have seen something saying that it will be around $300 AUD. I am prepared to pay that. But if they do go with the insane price of 250 euros then I probably won't buy it. I want to buy games for it and not spend another $100 on the console. Also, are there any bundles for the Wii or different packages like the is for the Xbox 360 (I can't stand Microsoft) and the PS3 (i like the PS2 and the PSP but the price and the game issue have put me off that!)? I love the wiimote! And I think that using SD cards instead of massive hard drives (and expensive hard drives) is a great idea. Nintendo focus on gaming mainly so you don't need so much space.

Ben, no release date/price has been confirmed yet. Some people think that they will be released on September 14th though. Nonetheless, I believe Nintendo has said "no more than US $250" which is about AU $330, but that is a maximum. I live in aus too.

It's likely that the Big N will make a turnaround and Sony will take a big dent. Why? PS3 is not even in mass production because BluRay drives are in short supply. Because of this there will be many problems with new ps3s. Just remember to add a $99 extended warantee to that $599 and $59 games and 3x $50 controllers. Thst's already $900+! For that kind of money I want top quality and 10/10 rated games. Xbox180, 360, 720 whatever, not even fully backwards compatible! Waste of time. You know your system has problems when there are aftermarket cooling systems specifically for 360. If I want a toaster, I will go to Searz. Ahhh yes the Wii, here to save the day. You can't go wrong with a pricetag less than $250. Controllers will not cost too much since it's a party system and there are optimistic reviews about the games. A HD for storage is good and a media player will be a plus, but your CPU can do all that! The Big N seal of quality means what it says. I'm no fanboy, but facts are facts.

For Nintendo, it all started to go downhill with the N64. Actually, this kind of shows the PS3 fanboys that graphics aren't everything as the PS1's graphics sucked next to the N64's but Sony crushed Nintendo in sales. Nintendo has all the things they need to make a hit as big as the NES, but that's only if they play their cards right. If they don't, the Wii will go the way of the Gamecube, or worse, the Virtual Boy.

I've been a gamer since 1985 when the NES first came out. I was 8, I enjoyed playing that thing so much. Then came the SNES, the greatest gaming system of all time! That system has the most memories in it and I still play it to this day. Then comes the N64 which had way too much hype and didn't deliver except for the greatest Zelda title ever released (in my opinion), then I got a Playstation which was totally dope. I followed the Final Fantasy franchise from the first through the third (or sixth) with Nintendo, and then Squaresoft made an alliance with Sony. Bringing us FF7, FF8, FF9, FFX, FFX-2 FFXI, and soon FFXII. That's what made me switch to the Playstation 1 and 2. Well, I bought a Playstation 2 when it first came out for $300 bucks and it only lasted 3 months. The machine just quit reading the discs. I got so pissed off at this ripoff that I took the console and threw it on the ground smashing it to pieces! That's when I bought a Nintendo Gamecube which I still have 5 years later. But what bugs me is that none of the GOOD games are on it (in my opinion). Windwaker was lame, Mario sunshine was alright but there was nothing really solid about it like Final Fantasy, and quite a few exotic anime games I didn't even know existed until I looked inside the display case for PS2 at Walmart! All the developers flocked to Sony! That is what makes or breaks a company! Don't get me wrong, I love Mario and Zelda but like I said, even those franchises can have lackluster games. Unfortunately Nintendo only has these classic franchises to keep them afloat otherwise they'd be gone by now. But I think they are being stretched thin. Also, I love Nintendo's ingenuity but I think that sometimes it's too much. Sometimes people just want to have solid games and developers just want a solid standard to create games. The ingenuity is what might just kill Nintendo, if they're not careful. Just count the number of companies making games for Microsoft and Sony, then look at Nintendo, trying to be so original and different, but losing out on developers! Games make the system, the system don't make the games. That's the voice of experience. Oh by the way, I'm now a huge PC fan and my computer's power outranks that of Xbox 360, PS3 AND Nintendo Wii! Nintendo still holds a special place in my heart though.

An original fan, alright! I was first hooked on games when I played my friend in Goldeneye 64. The thing about 3rd party games and Nintendo is that before Satoru Iwata became president of Nintendo, the guy before him set high standards for 3rd party developers and rejected any game he didn't like or thought wasn't good for Nintendo's image. Hence, all the kiddy games. Because of the hard standards set by Nintendo, lots of developers went instead to Sony which was easier to program for and was open to new things. That was the real reason why Square Enix left Nintendo for Sony. Hopefully with the dev kit being so cheap, the developers will move back to Nintendo. On a hardware note, I don't mind the Wii having a dvd player or other media things as long as they don't jack up the price for it as a kickback. If the Sony fanboys want something that has incredible graphics, music and a dvd/blu-ray player they might as well get a laptop and do some actual work while they're at it!

GT you're misunderstanding what I said. I didn't say that Nintendo had a lot of bad games, I said that Nintendo didn't have a lot of games from third party developers. Most of the good games Nintendo had were made by Nintendo or a second party game developer (one that's owned by Nintendo). The only major support came from Rareware, EA, Lucasarts and Hudson. Most of the developers decided to still make most of the games for Sony when the PS2 came out a while back.

The good ones are some of the 1st party titles and Resident Evil 4. Despite my optimism for the revolution, you have to admit that things have not been good for the BigN since the n64 days. Wii's success really depends on 3rd party support or else it's just another fanboy's system. It also has the potential to be a mainstream system and not a "kiddie station" because the wiimote is so versatile. Since this is the era of the FPS, it's IMPERATIVE that Wii has a killer FPS for the shopping season.

That ain't true, if all those three most powerful gaming companies combined no computer could match it, because you would have Microsoft's computer knowledge, Sony's games plus Nintendo's way advanced technology, games plus creativity. The N64 did bring out awesome games, I just didn't get to play most of them so now I just play the games I think are good on the GC. When the wii comes out there are a tonne of games I want to get because they interest me more than any of Microsoft's games or Sony's. I know Sony and Microsoft have given up because they are out of ideas to use.

I think the hits of NGC are: Super Smash Bros Melee, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Mario Party games, Mario sporting games, Fire Emblem. Probably plenty more but I don't want to mention them all, I'm just mentioning the ones that sold the most in the quickest time.

Hey ganondorf, I didn't say that THE computer was better than the companies that make their consoles! I said MY computer has more power than that of Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360. Separate, not combined. In other words, my computer's hardware specs exceed that of Sony's PS3 because the 2 Nvidia video cards they put in there are Nvidia Geforce 6800's, both of them put together equal that of my Nvidia Geforce 7600 GT overclocked. I've got a faster CPU Pentium 4 dual Core 3.2GHZ HT, same amount of video RAM 256MB, 1Gig of main RAM, 200 GB HD and can do everything that the PS3 can do. Put two videocards together through SLI, also they both run on PCI Express x16, Read Dual layer DVD's, Burn DVD's, Has hi-speed internet and runs games that don't even come out for PS3. I can run every game I have on full maxed-out settings all the time! I can run Oblivion with 60 FPS, instead of 30 FPS like the Xbox360. Nintendo has already stated that their console's power will not match that of the other two systems. So, I enjoy my modified, self built, souped up masterpiece computer! Don't mean to offend anyone.

I have one question. When you buy the wii or just the controller, will the wiimote be sold by itself, or will it automatically be sold with a nunchuk attachment? The toys'r'us by my house has a deal where you pay $50 and you get a wii reserved with an extra controller and 2 games. I was wondering whether that means I get 2 wiimotes and 2 nunchuks or just 2 wiimotes. I haven't read anything saying about that.

Rick, I've got a pc with not nearly the capabilities of yours but it runs any games I play on it with full capacity (and most are high in graphical details). Anywho, although our computers may be able to run any *PC* game, a lot are not as good as console games, namely the Wii. Hence it doesn't matter how good your computer is, because the games will be played on consoles and not on the computer.

Yes, indeed the computer does not run PS3, Xbox 360 or Wii games, but those don't play each other's games either. Each system has its own strengths and weaknesses, and you'd basically have to own EVERY system to get everything you want. Random hero is right, my PC isn't cheap, but it is worth it. See, I can upgrade my system for years to come, whereas console owners will be stuck with the same technology until another system comes out. Don't forget, the technology for games starts on the computer and then gets passed down to the consoles. Oh, by the way, there are all sorts of different types of motion sensors for the PC. Just google it!

Well 1 game that no computer can run perfectly is World of Warcraft. I've got most of the stuff you have too Rick and so does my mate on his laptop, but no computer can go to that measure with the worlds number 1 game. But anyway the Wii should be announced soon, I couldn't give a stuff about what I do on the computer. I prefer Nintendo because all I want to do on the computer is talk on my MSN, music and very rarely play games.

To Ben the Skunk's post, The BigN has not confirmed how they will sell extra controllers. I believe that it may be in their best interest to sell a stand-alone wiimote and a nunchuck bundle. It will actually depend on the number of games that support the combo. There are actually plans for extra attachments so it might ship separately. I've bashed M$ and $ony so much that, this time I'm going to point out my gripes on the Wii. They claim that the system is easy to develop for but this MAY mean that we see a saturation of lackluster titles OR a lot of great creative games. Maybe I'm wrong. So many games on the market may actually backfire because up and coming developers will have to spend more on marketing. How are they going to distribute controller? Nunchuck or wiimote combo? They need a good price point. The classic controller needs to be contoured to make it sexy. Enough storage for virtual console games and no indication of the price. These problems are actually minute compared to the herculean issues such as shortage of diodes on PS3, BooRay, overheating on 360 and separate HD-DVD.

My computer isn't nearly as good as Rick's, but I can run World of Warcraft perfectly (I think it has much more to do with internet speed, rather than computer specs. Given it is an online game). The only time that game would become slow is if your internet was to lag, and not a fault of your comp's processor.

We all know Nintendo's games will be creative but we also don't know if some of those games will backfire or be big enough to make the game a series or not. But I hope that all my favorite games continue as a series of games because it would be more interesting and fun.

I think that red steel has a lot riding on it. You see, red steel was made by ubisoft with a ton of support from nintendo. Now other third party devs that say that they are interested in the wii (and a lot of them are) are probably waiting to see how red steel makes out with sales and reviews. They are picking this game because, like I said ubi had lots of support from nintendo. Time will tell if red steel is a hit or a flop, but if it's a hit, those reluctant devs will be thinking "wow. This game did very good. I guess that a wii game can be possible and good for our company". If the game is a flop, then devs will be thinking "gee, we may lose some serious money if we make a game for the wii. Better play it safe and make it a surefire on the 360".

I agree with Mr Coffee. Red Steel is the game that 3rd party developers are looking at because it's one of the first 3rd party games to utilize the wiimote combo. If Red Steel is executed well then FPS devs are going to run to Wii. If not, then Wii is going to be a fanboy's system just like the GCN. I really hope that Red will be the $hIt because I don't really like FPS and I hope that Red will win me over. Also, Batallion Wars has the possibility of bringing Socom and those other war games to the Wii. The BigN may have its new fangled wiimote but if 3rd party devs are afraid of it, then they are going to run to 360. Why not $ony? I HEARD that the Cell is VERY hard to program for so a really great game MAY come out only once a year or so. Not to mention, you will have to buy the lackluster ones at $59. 99 a pop (this is confirmed). I'm not wasting my time and $$$ on any half assed attempt of a "next gen game". This now leads to another point. If 360 and PS3 only have good big budget big games coming out once in a blue moon, then what about the little guys with the new ideas? Wii's here to help, but that does not mean that all the ideas will be good. Therefore Wii MAY have a lot of not so good games on the shelf. In essence, BigN is taking risks for innovation on behalf of the industry, while Sony and MS "learn" what works from them, and that as they say is that.

The Gamecube could only ever operate at 25% because of small memory cards, but now Wii is using SD cards as memory and has loads of internal memory too. So Wii will probably work at 9/10 of PS3 graphics or something.

Wiimote UPDATE! For those who don't know, the wiimote is going to have built in memory, supposedly 4000 bytes. Yes bytes! It's supposedly going to be used for control settings for specific games. Also, is it really true that the wii is actually going to be more graphically powerful than initially shown in the demos? One other gripe that I have with the wii is the small internal flash memory. N64 roms can get as large as 30MB+ and I don't want to end up buying a 4GB card and end up losing it. Maybe they will be coded differently and compresed. Anyway, I'm sure the BigN will offer a reasonable solution.

I agree with wii-mote dude. Sony "borrowed" so much from BigN, it's sickening. "SIX DEGREES OF FREEDOM" - give me a break! I went through about 4 Dualshock 2 controllers, 1 PS1 and 1 PS2 because of a myriad of build quality problems. Although the CUBE has unmatched build quality, the layout sucks. That stopped me from buying Soul Calibur 2 for GC. I expect the same great quality on the Wii, which I'm glad for. I think that Sony's 6D control is going to flop because it's so boring. A Paintball franchise sounds like a good idea!

RELEASE DATE! NYT has slipped out a release date and price for the Wii in the USA - $250 for the console, packaged with the Wii Sports game for a Nov 19 launch! Now I just need to wait for the official Nintendo conference to see when Wii will be release in Australia.

BigN confirmed that the wiimote will retail at $39 and the nunchuck itself at $19. A complete extra control set will be about $60. I have to admit, that's a bit high when it comes to the BigN, but with such a novel interface I guess I can let them slide. With that in mind, if Sony charges $60 for an inferior Dualshock3, then there will be a new rule in my house: BYOC (Bring Your Own Controller). I suppose that would apply to my Wii too. I'm just mad that it's only launching in white but of course, BigN will release new colors and bundles HOPEFULLY for the holiday season.

I bet that Sony will make the dualshock 2.5 because the DS3 is just going to suck. No app is going to truly make use of the DS3. The Playstation brand name is the ONLY thing that is going to keep Sony in the black.

Wii is better
Wii will be one of the best consoles, I'd think they would actually get on top. This console does say its for families and friends, that's pretty cool. Wii includes PPU, wow! That's crazy. I hope they have a profile and achievements, like "360".

The mii avatar should have custom textures so people can add pics to the Tshirt. If the wii played videos, then the issue of codec support can complicate things.

I'm going to get a Wii, probably in December. Playstation has always been a let down to me besides PS1. The Wii is gonna blow all the stupid people who think Nintendo is for kids faces' off. But they should have made it red.

Sony didn't borrow Nintendo's idea of having a motion sensor in the controller, they have been working on it for years they just kept it from everyone as they've done with most of the ps3. Plus the ps3 and Wii's motion detection system has some differences.

Hey if you guys hate Sony then you hate Play Station. Thank you so much! But maybe we shouldn't go too hard on SEGA because they DID bring all those Arcade games like Dirt Rally and that Zombie game and all those racing games. Everyone in Australia here seems a lot more happy with sports than games so I'm kind of on my own out of my friends with games. Everyone I ask thinks that Nintendo is for babies just because it doesnt have a stupid sports game like AFL 2006 (Australia only, it's our version of football, we call it footy) or even basketball games and car games. It's people like that who don't appreciate Nintendo's hard work and cute little characters like Kirby, adventurous characters like Link and not to mention the starter of it all, Mario.

Couldn't have said it better myself Ja-Mez. Nintendo is practically the creator of fun. Don't get me wrong, sports games and racing is all cool, but in the end it's not enough. You need adventure and humour, and that's exactly what Nintendo has brought us. Games like Super Mario Bros, LOZ and Kirby are games that make gaming so wonderful!

From my point of view the two leading companies in gaming are SONY and NINTENDO. But I cannot agree with paying around $499-599 for a console. From what I've heard Sony is having problems with the ships or something like that, I'm sure that they are only rushing for the lauch date. More internal problems on the first version of the PS3 because they were rushing. Now for the wii, I don't know if the new console will satisfy my thirst for anime games because of the so called region lock rumour.

Region locking sucks! Anyway, the PS3 shows that Sony is out of breath and ideas. What Sony is trying to do is prolong the life of the PS3 by making it availible in various configs in the future and they would also make it upgradable. For example, they "say" it will also function as a DVR. For those who are not familiar with video codecs, uncompressed HD video takes up a LOT OF SPACE. The 60GB HD will quickly fill up with HD recordings, cached game data, purchased demos (yes purchased) etc, you get the idea. By marketing it as a CPU, Sony will just offer unnecessary "upgrades" to heighten the "PS" experience. A CPU does the EXACT same thing and better. I just can't believe that fanboys are going to fall for Sony's fluffed up PS2. The PS3 is the precursor to the demise of the PS brand and their aim is to stretch it beyound the 5-6yr console lifespan. I will just get one if they happen to start producing good units in a few years. Oh yeah, I forgot that this was a wii thread! Wii has to get out there and get noticed! They need larger storage, robust online and wiimote bundle incentives, and the BLACK COLOR SOON!

The Ps3 Press Conference was pathetic. I laughed maniacally through the whole thing after the price appeared on-screen. No one in their right mind would save up for that without being a rich one first.

PS3 got owned from the very start. They eventually knew they would get beaten because they lack experience, as do Microsoft because Sony makes tvs, cameras etc not consoles. That's why they are losing the battle in innovative ideas. As for Microsoft they are only good at making computers, nothing else. Region locking is stupid, why do it? PS3 havent given up on the boomerang control, my friend who loves playstation said that sony have decided to bring it back. Nintendo have changed the name with every console they have made, while Sony and Microsoft have only added numbers! Like xbox, xbox360, PS, PS2, PS3. Nintendo wanna be more creative than that and entertained me time and time again. I hope they continue to amaze me.

Breaking news! Ken Kutaragi announced that the PS3 is able to make toast! The slot loading drive is able to handle an unprecedented 2 slices of bread compared to 360 only taking 1. Breakfast will never be the same. Mmmmmm toast.

The Wii is the best next-gen console because it is a next-gen console. What I mean by that is, it changed a lot from last consoles, Gamecube, Xbox, and PS2. Like the Wiimote, you can aim at the screen and lots more stuff. The PS3 is basically the same as the PS2 to me because it has the same controller, the console looks like the PS2 and the only thing that changed was the graphics (High Def). The Xbox 360 is alright but the Wii is perfect, 10 out of 10 no doubt.

Firstly since I'm the only person here to have bought all of the next gen consoles, I am the only one that really has the right to criticise the consoles. Firstly I have to say, that the Wii simply CRUNCHES the competition. Firstly the console comes with the nunchuck feature and the normal/classic remote. Secondly you don't have to wave your arms in the air all the time because you also have the option of using it like a normal controller. Thirdly Zelda:TP is the best game ever made, they were ingenious in the making of the speakers in the controller. PS3: I'm going to sell this on ebay, because it is a waste of money IT IS NOT WORTH IT! And as for the 360 I'm keeping that for the exclusive titles like gta4, halo:wars and other games. So in the end its Wii > xb360 > ps3.
