It's been confirmed that the Wii will be capable of 480p output. Previous rumors of the component cable shipping with the Wii were false however.
Instead a composite cable will be boxed in with the Wii and the component cable will be sold separately by Nintendo for $29.99. The component cables will only be available for purchase from online retailers. Gamecube component cables will not work for the Wii.

Wii's World is not officially affiliated with Nintendo! (but they wish we were).

Well, that was great news.

Yer I suppose it is. Nintendo is a marketing genious.

Heck yeh that's great news, the picture will look twice as good on my new 50" plasma while playing my new wii.

I knew that.

480p is great news but PAL Europe also supports 576p, which is the standard sometimes nown as ADVANCED progressive scan. I hope developers not only polish the games to PAL 60hz but also 576p resolution as it's only a code tweak to convert from 480p. Maybe PAL games will default to 480p, that's ok with me but correct support is best.

The gamecube cable will not work for the Wii? NO!

So does the higher output produce a better picture? And what does the other end of the cable connect to?
cubeboy101 said:
Component in itself gives a better image quality. It also supports progressive scan, the other two cables are left/right sound cables sending the sound including the pro logic 5.1 signal to your tv or surroud sound home cinema.

So, if this is an official picture up there then fraer jock, it would mean that Wii had the things SEPERATELY on the AV cables, like the original Playstation. Interesting.

That's great because I'm planing on buying a HDTV. I know that the Wii won't be able to give me 720p or 1080p but at least it will give me progressive scan.
cubeboy101 said:
Maybe a 3rd party company will make a Wii component plug in box that upscales Wii games at 480i to 1080i and 480p/576p to 720p. Yes it's fake hd but it would work similar to xd engine on hd tellys.

So will the cable packaged with the Wii work with a not flat screen TV just a regular one with the red, white, yellow hook-up?
Pink said:
Ablex: correct. You need to buy the Wii component cables to take advantage of 480p games. Trust me, it's worth it.
