Weather and News channels delayed

Weather and News channels delayed

Nintendo have decided to delay the channels for weather and news, which were initially intended for launch. The Opera web browser software will also be absent on launch day.

The new release date for Wii Forecast is December 20th. Wii News will be available on January 27th. It's not yet known when Opera will be there but Nintendo say this will be announced soon.

The Shopping Channel will be ready from the start with 12 classic games for download.

What's the deal? Why did they delay the forecast and news? I'm guessing there's some sort of problem with the system so they have to work out a few bugs.

What's with all the delays and postponements!? Half the time delays don't matter because the releases are below expectations. Here's another channel to think about: traffic reports.

Annoying.

Doesn't really matter, people won't really use the Wii forecast channel and Wii news channel. But Opera, people are going to use that.

It really doesn't matter to me because I can't get on the web. But that is stupid they're taking things off.

Well only the real hardcore gamers are going to buy it that early and I don't think they want to look at weather, internet maybe but not weather.

Who cares, as long as we can play the games (unless they delay that!).

I won't even need to know the News or the Weather. I'll be inside playing LoZ:OoT. C'mon, I know a lot of other people will be doing the same.

It takes a while because the features are online.

Well, the weather forecast will be in Japan, so maybe they're delaying it until after the japanese Wii is released? I was looking forward to booting up the Wii browser on the first day I got it though.

Mr McCloud spelled his own name wrong. But this does bite; I was looking forward to chacking the weather in Tokyo.

What gives? I was looking forward to seeing what Nintendo had to offer with online straight out of the box; and all I get are a couple of classic games for the VC that I don't really feel like playing again. People are asking who will use the News and Weather? Well, I would! It's so much easier to boot my Wii than it is to boot my computer; and forget about trying the radio or TV, you never know when you're going to get the information you want. So much for Wii becoming part of my morning ritual before work.

At least Wii get to still play, besides there are more channels to pick from. It will probably get updated by the Christmas holiday!

Well, obviously Nintendo is getting some last minute features on those channels finished.

So are the Wiis before the date not going to have those channels or are they going to appear on?

SOBS said:

Ungrateful bastards! Seriously some of us haven't even got our Wiis yet and some people won't even get one before xmas. Yet you lot are already complaining because it temporarily can't tell you the frickin weather. JEEZ. Listen to yourselves.

DragonFoxCoon said:

I think it's not the Wiis that have these capabilities; it's Nintendo. Since their main online service won't be available to the US until they launch the Pokemon game (Lucario rocks), they sort of want to get us eager to play games online by slowly leading us in with cool features, like the already available Shop Channel. Either that, or they had a last minute meltdown at the server and had to delay it for repairs.

No, think about the 'slowly leading us in' part, that's nicer than server meltdown. Don't TVs tell you the weather? And if you want the weather immediately can't you stick your head outdoors? But then again with a Wii it might be a bit hard to leave.

DragonFoxCoon said:

True; TV's tell us the weather. But can they tell us the weather in Tokyo whenever we want?

Nintendo are looking for a service to provide the news and to an extent the weather. Methinks they have the weather business already set, they just need a news service; which is understandably a tedious task if you think about it. Both finding and convincing a group of such a huge project is going to take a bit of work.

Will you need an internet connection for the news and weather?

Avatar

tabsina said:

No, your Wii picks up the temperature and guesses the conflicts that are taking place in the world. /sarcasm, of course you need internet to see the news.

Orpheon said:

Either wireless internet or direct Ethernet, although for the latter you will need an Ethernet adapter for the Wii.

12-20-2006 was the date they said for the weather channel to launch, and today is the 19th. I just finished downloading it and honestly it's pretty helpful. I live in a small town, so I didn't figure there were going to be any other towns nearby that I could get remotely close weather from. Well, the next closest town that I can choose from is about 15 minutes away. All things considered, that's pretty good. Since I don't like to sit through the news just to see the weather, I can just get on my Wii, get the info I want and save myself the hour long, boring newscast.
