One of Nintendo's main marketing guys George Harrison spoke recently at the E3 event. He confirmed there's not going to be much action on the Gameboy hereon in.
"In our marketing this year you really won't see much push for Game Boy itself, so it will kind of seek its own level. It's hard to say in the future if we will ever bring back the Game Boy trademark. It was a big risk for us to actually pass on it and call the new product the Nintendo DS, but it was part of Mr Iwata's philosophy that if we're going to make a radical difference and try to reach a new audience, then we have to change the name. We had to make a break, even though we had one of the greatest trademarks in the history of the industry".
He also said we might not have to wait until 2008 for WiiWare. Nintendo has already given out the development tools so there's a chance we'll see some titles late this year.

Wii's World is not officially affiliated with Nintendo! (but they wish we were).

As long as it hits its 20 year mark in '09. It'd be cruel if Nintendo pulled the plug on the Gameboy name until then.

That is so sad about the gameboy. I remember when I bought my first gameboy. But I'm confused about what wiiware is. What is wiiware? Can somebody post me an answer?

I see where they are going with this. From Gamecube to Wii, Gameboy to DS. It's part of the changes that Nintendo has to go through to transform itself as a company. I can honestly see how the Gameboy does not fit into Nintendo's new philosophy or renaissance, so to speak. Anyway, the past is the past, and they have to let it go. Still, the Gameboy trademark is a guaranteed money printer, and I would hate to see it retire after almost two decades.

Well, we already knew the Gameboy was dead but I'm STILL playing Link to the Past on it.

Well, I can see why they're not really doing much on the Game Boy. They have so many more good titles on the DS than on the GB and there's also a lot more innovation with the DS. Still, I'm going to miss it.

Nintendo has an article on their website about wiiware. But bassically it is a thing where small developers can "post" their games as a downloadable item on the Wii shop channel.

So are they still going to produce the DS or is it just GBA they are going to cut off?

WiiWare is a development kit for the Wii that allows third parties (mainly authorised developers) to create software for the Wii, outside of Nintendo's control. However, it is alleged that this will not be for the general public.

Wiiware works in two ways. As a debug unit, for coders and game developers to write and test original games. And also for uploading games for the general public, however this will probably be licensed under a different name, before you can download it from the Wii. Note that all games on the wiiware system will be made by little known companies, groups of two or three (or more), with little coding experience or from people completely new to coding on a console. It has been assumed that the actual process of making a game on the Wii is almost identical, or has distinct parallels with the Gamecube. This will make it easier to code, than say, an Xbox 360 and dare I say it, PS3. What Wiiware offers is quite phenomenal, as it lets budding game designers build, test, post and play their own games, all around the world (we hope). Good Job Nintendo. How about a release date for the BIG 3 in Australia. [I'm feeling lonely after E3, we will probably have to wait until next year. I mean, the US and Japan got Super Paper Mario early this year, we have to wait until September. Hopefully the delay won't be the same for Metroid, Mario or Smash].

I'm looking forward to seeing something even crazier than the DS to succeed it in a few years.

Mine was gray, yellowish-green screen that could not be seen in the dark, and huge. I remember they launched the first gameboy color the same day as Ocarina of Time (in the US). I'm even thinking November 23rd, 1998?

I've always hated how companies save the the good stuff for next gen so it's almost like they force you to buy a new console.

They might release a 20th anniversary Game Boy or something, so there might be hope.
