How the Virtual Console works

More information has been released about the Wii's Virtual Console, giving us a pretty clear picture of how it will function:

  • VC Games can be played using Gamecube controllers.
  • Games can be kept in either Flash memory or on SD cards.
  • Wii maintains a log of your downloads. If you delete a game you can always download it later free of charge.
  • Games will be locked to the console that downloaded them, meaning you can't swap them with your buddies.
  • If your console breaks down, Nintendo will offer support so you don't lose all your VC games.
  • Digital manuals will come with the games.
  • Up to 10,000 points can be stored on your Wii at once.

It's also been stated that the classic controller can't be used to play Gamecube games.

I'm surprised that nobody really brought this up. Since you can store your VC games on the SD card, can't you just copy the SD card? Maybe Nintendo took provisions for this just like they did with Pokemon Box. If they made the VC games CHEAPER, then there would be no desire to copy and sales would go up. This was probably the reason why Nintendo was adamant about making the system log permanent.

Looks like the game pad to have is the gamecube one.

Good, now I don't have to spend another $20 on the classic controller. Instead I'll just have to spend another $35 on a fourth Wavebird so my friends can come over and play some good ol' NES games for the first time in a very long while.

Unfortunate that you can't use the Classic Controller for Gamecube games, but ah well. Other than that, sweet.

I still think those N64 games are too expensive.

Dammit now I got to shell out more cash for a gamecube pad but will I need the classic controller? Nope which means I save money in the long run. YAY!

Do you enter any codes?

This is the way downloaded games should work, even downloaded software. The company you get them from should have a good record of your purchase so you don't get screwed when something happens to your download.

Freakin' sweet. I think it's awesome the VC system. It sounds concrete, like a fantastic idea.

GCN controllers suck, that's why all the ports only come out on XBX and PS2? Thank goodness for the Wii classic controller this time around. Does anyone know if the classic control works with GCN games? I must play GCN Soul Calibur!

How do you put points into the wii if you get the points from a video game store on the card?

Disagree, Gamecube controllers are the best of this generation (and any other previous generations). They're so comfortable to use, it's a real feat of engineering.

Do you read it? It says "It's also been stated that the classic controller can't be used to play Gamecube games".

Is anyone going to answer this important question?

It's too simple to explain, FJ. Just get a Wii, look at the Wii's menu for 5 seconds, and you'll understand.

Damn, I missed the last line of the article. What a disappointment. Let me rephrase my statement: The GCN control has great ergonomics (better than Dualshock), but the button layout just sucks. It doesn't work well for fighting games.

Fraer jock you connect the console to a phone line, you go on the shopping channel then you pay for a game and you download it!

From what I have seen you buy and download VC games using the Wii Channels GUI.

Sure is handy that if you don't have enough space for more virtual console games, you can delete them and redownload them for free. Then again, you'll probably lose any saved data you had on them.

I saw someone exhibiting a Wii development unit. He said that there are 48 channel slots. As WolfKolf said, each VC game takes up a slot so what happens when all the channels are filled and you want another VC game? I don't want to erase the saved games that I took my precious time on. I think that there should have been a separate Virtual Console Channel that flashes each game in the VC window.

Thank you charles wf that is very helpful (seriously).

I'm glad there's a point limit, that guarantees that there is nothing buyable worth over $100 (US).

Master Foot, even though there are only 48 channel slots that doesn't limit your VC game numbers. You can choose if you want every game to have its own icon, or if every VC game will be on one channel.

Not sure if this has anything to do with games, but it concerns me that nobody has said anything on how big the sensor bar is!

I got rid of my GC controllers because I figured the Classic controller, with the same number of buttons and analog sticks, would work in its place for GC games. So now I'd have to say that I'm pissed. What is the classic controller good for then if the GC controller performs all its functions plus more it can't?

Is there a way to get around the whole lock system, so you could get the games from a different console and put them onto your own using a sd card? Or any other way.

How it works. Everyone knows that. But the question is, hardware or emulation?
