January 2008 NPD sales numbers
The official NPD numbers are in, describing console sales for the month of January 2008 in North America.
No surprise that Wii wins again, although PS3 finds itself at the dizzy heights of #2.
- Nintendo Wii - 274,000
- Sony PS3 - 269,000
- Nintendo DS - 251,000
- Sony PSP - 230,000
- Microsoft Xbox 360 - 230,000
It's thought the reason for Sony's sudden upturn is Blu-ray winning the format war against HD-DVD. The PS3 console is about the cheapest Blu-ray player around, so most people are likely getting it to watch movies on.

People are getting the PS3 for Blu-ray? Well at least sony has some money to eat food tonight, instead of going to Nintendo and eating garbage from their building.
Wii Rox
PS3, top 3 (faints).

Anyone screaming "External Hard Disk" for Wii?
Dracoris Raidek
In response to WiiNinja. I'm an anonymous (they always are) Wii expert. My question to you is, why do YOU want an external hard disk? What would you like its functionality purpose to be? I'm curious to what exactly you would use it for? I like hearing the word of Nintendo fans, discussing their ideas on web forums. Give me an idea to what you look forward to in an external hard disk.

I don't get why people are crying for an external hard disk! The Wii uses SD cards to add memory, external hard disks look ugly anyways, and SD cards are invisible on the Wii. I don't get it.

Whaaaaat!? This is crazy talk. I'm sure this won't last long.

The Wii is still on top! Who cares about sony.
YoshLee
There's no way this will last long, no offense sony but the only special features the PS3 has is blu-ray, and being insanely more expensive than it should be.

No, Sony doesn't get to eat, WiiFreak. They lose money on console sales. What they need is better ps3 game sales.
Tennindo
PS3 may be at #2 now, but it may not last long. Devil may cry 4 is out so that is the hype right now, and when Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out. Am sure that will have its time on PS3. Overall it's time for Sony so make it or break it, and with #2 they are making it. For now anyways.

Remember. Competition is good for business. Plus the Wii isn't competing any more.

Well, PS3 having Blu-Ray and costing five-hundred and ninety-nine US dollars was a way to sell out Blu-Ray to Sony. Looks like it's finally working.

NOOOO! Recall your right-hand seat, DS.
Scooby Jew
Sony is speechless, I'll bet. Much like me, nobody saw this coming. Won't last long, though; just wait until the March sales come in. Brawl.

Um. The Wii will never be beaten by the PS3! Right?

External hard disks would allow users to download movies (although not HD) and other content through the shop channel/browser, they have SO much more memory than the SD option. Above all this, it would not be hard to do, think about it, all Nintendo need to do is allow the Wii to access them (through one of the 2 usb's) with a downloadable driver and other companies could make them, or we could even use ones made for the PC. It's a simple step and I see no reason to not allow it, even the XBOX function that allows access to USB sticks is so much handier for music than the SD option, and I can just plug in my MP3 (it's not even a Zune or an Ipod and it works!).

I don't get it, blu-ray and HD-DVD pretty much do the same thing: give you a pretty picture. Sure blu-ray has some things over the HD-DVD, but a blu-ray player costs about as much as a decent LCD HDTV with a whole bunch of things on it. One of the only differences between the two is disk space.
The Yoshi Guy
Bluray is beating hd-dvd? Nooo. Why?
Super King
PS3 almost overtook the Wii. Don't be so quick to underestimate that big black box. But I sure as hell am not going to buy one.
