Opera, creator of the Wii's web browser software have confirmed that it will be free for download in all regions until June 2007. The browser won't be with the console out of the box, but will be a free download through the Shop Channel.
After the free period new users will have to pay for the software using Wii Points. The number of points required to buy it is currently unknown. Existing users who have downloaded it already for free won't have to pay at all though.
The Wii browser can offer the same features as Opera 9, including Ajax content like Google Maps, Java and Flash, as well as standard things like bookmarks etc. The Wiimote will play an integral part in browsing the web.

GOOD! I was planning to buy it right when colors are releasedbut I will definitely buy it before June. Now all I need is the USB LAN connector which can be found on ebay for a small price.

Well at least it is free, that makes me feel better.

Let me get this straight, if you buy the Wii right away you are grandfathered in when people have to start paying for the browser?
wii-mote dude said:
Yeah. All we have to do is get it before june. Easy!
Hey said:
What's the point of pricing it after June if you can download it for free and never pay a cent on it again?
Jimmie said:
To make people buy the Wii as soon as possible.

I preordered mine and I can't wait to stay in that 1 room and play with my Wii all day! I'm so going to download the browser.
Graeme said:
The point of pricing it after June is probably so they can actually get people using it. If it wasn't free at all, people wouldn't want to buy it and it would get off to a really slow start. But if it's free, people will tell others about it and before long Nintendo has a huge user base on Wii-internet. Word of mouth will keep getting more people to use it even after June 07.

Whoah. I overlooked that reason. It's a pretty smart strategy.

Yes, that's good. I will download it the first 2 minutes I get my wii (well, maybe after Wii Sports!).

That's sweet it's free but I wish it was free forever. How much do you have to pay a month?
ANON said:
You pay nothing a month it's free. No subscription, only what you already pay if you've got the net!

My Wii's already hooked up to the internet. I'm sending this from it. But will the full version be free? Only time will tell.
