Seemingly contrary to statements made by Perrin Kaplan the other day, General Manager of Nintendo UK David Yarnton has stated that Wii will be region locked for both games and online content. There is some confusion as to whether he was talking specifically about european consoles or globally.

Wii's World is not officially affiliated with Nintendo! (but they wish we were).

No! I hope he means Europe. I live in an american air force base. I want to play Japanese games also.

I hope that is strictly Europe and not all PAL regions, because I live in Australia and also want those import games. I don't think it would be a good move from Nintendo to disallow this.

What do they get out of region locking? So what if we get their games cheaper overseas. What's wrong with that!

I agree I'm from Australia too tabsina and I think Nintendo would deeply regret this. If this happens I won't buy the Wii because most of the games I want probably won't come out to Australia. I hope Nintendo overthrows this because that means Australia would probably only get like 12 games and only 3 out of those would be fun. Damn that UK guy.

They were doing so good! I hope they don't make it region locked they would deply regret it and damage the wii's reputation on being an almost perfect system.

Region locked or Region free? Stop messing with our minds!

I hope that happens just in Europe because if it affects America that means it affects Australia too.

So any new news on this? Is it just the UK?

It can't be just Europe or the UK. Do You even know the definition of region locked? If it's europe, it's everywhere.

Living in the UK, I get really annoyed not being able to play inport games on consoles without doing something to the internal workings. I was pleased when the Sony PSP was region free for games (although what a waste of money that was). If Nintendo are as wise as they make out they would make it region free, making more revenue from selling Japan-only games for example, to anyone who wants them. Rant over. One thing I want to confirm with people. Wii doesn't play DVD video, Nintendo figured everyone already has DVD players in their houses already. To cut costs correct?
PHiRE said:
Are any consoles region free? I mean actual consoles not handhelds. I think there may be legal restraints for all this, I'm not sure it's just Nintendo being awkward.

Region locking is the one thing people don't want. People who travel around the world are going to want to bring this small console on the plane with them or in a car with a tv inside.
Polly Dolly said:
Region locking just means that if you have a PAL console, you can't play NTSC games on it, not that you can't play on it in Japan or America.

PAL consoles, NTSC games, what the heck does that mean?
