Not exactly Wii news, but still cool. Sega are teaming up with Bioware to release a Sonic RPG game exclusively on the DS.
Sadly the Sonic franchise has been hurtling downhill in recent times (since SA2 in my opinion), but this time out he looks to be in good hands. Bioware are responsible for some major RPG titles, for example:

Maybe this would bring back sonic's rep.

I've only heard of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and I vaguely remember Jade Empire, but I'm pretty sure that game was good. The Star Wars game really sucked though. That's just my opinion.

I have always loved the sonic games, huh going downhill.

I almost don't care. It's very cool that sonic is making a new game, but he can't hold as strong as a title such as mario. After going through companies, I think that game designers see they cannot exactly capture sonics true image. Just think about it for a second or two. Sonic is supposed to be the speediest thing on earth, yet game designers have a hard time making him reach 40mph. Not only that, but adults are trying too hard to make him use slang. I recall in one of the games him saying "yo watup g". I forgot which, but I'm pretty sure it was in there. Sorry adults, you try way too hard, and I wish sonic luck in his new life. To bioware; don't screw this up.

It's the hard truth, stinky; the Sonic franchise has gone to hell ever since Adventure 2. Heroes was decent, at best, and Shadow - I'm not even going there. Since that horrific game, I've stopped buying Sonic games as they've been coming out. But, to hear that Bioware is behind this title gives me a glimmer of hope that this game won't suck. And all you Sonic fanboys out there can (insert colorful language here).

Yeah, sonic's image changes too much in each game. Anyways, I don't really find a sonic rpg appealing.

Stinky, I'm not going to complain to Wii's World. If they don't like it, then that's up to them. That's their opinion. And as I said before the games have matured in both plot and gameplay. I respect Sega on a Sonic game about however they do it and how long it takes. Sonic's growing up and they're not your standard Sonic games.

Is this the "massive overhaul" that Sega was talking about?

This reminds me of Sister Sonic. You know, that one RPG game that got canceled? Not exactly the same fast-paced genre, but since Sonic hasn't even been able to do *that* right for the past 5 years (not including Sonic Rush, that was actually a good game), then you know. They should just go try something else. At least they're admitting that they're screwing up. If they're going to throw Sonic into 3rd-party hands, BioWare is one of the best choices. I for one still play Baldur's Gate games quite often. They know how to make games. Sega doesn't any more. So this will probably be good, but they might screw up. It's also possible that Sega will stick their heads in and make the game at least 45% retarded.

We need a different mario rpg. A sequel to SMRPG except rare made that game.

Sega did go a downlhill after SA2 because it's not run by most of the same people any more. But they're getting some good ideas now. Sonic and the Secret rings and Sonic Rush were amazing. Hope this RPG works out.

Star Wars KOTOR is an awesome game. It got many Game of the Year awards from many media sources. It is a great game, and upcoming mass effect looks similar. If Bioware puts any effort into this Sonic game, it will be awesome. I can't wait.

I just can't imagine Sonic lasting much longer. If this doesn't work, I don't think Sonic will have another game. I have played most of the Sonic games and didn't like many of them. I say his best bet is to appear in Brawl, but it doesn't seem likely. Anyway, this better be good, or say goodbye to our friend Sonic.
PHiRE said:
Well, it COULD be great. I like the sound of a Sonic RPG.
DJames said:
Sonic's best chance of a comeback is to appear in Brawl, it's the best way right now to jack up his popularity again. Sonic and the secret rings was a pretty fun game, but seeing the same stage over and over makes it boring. The Sonic Adventure series was the best set of Sonic games so maybe a SA3? It could have the Hero and Dark sides again with the chao and the upgrades that can be collected for both the players and the chao. Maybe the side characters like Chaos, Tikal and Amy can be playable. Anyway it's just my opinion.

I agree, like it or not Sonic should appear in Brawl if he has any hope to be as popular as he once was.
Sonic Phantom said:
Everyone listen to me. The Sonic series is not going to end! You know that. Smash Champion, you think that Sonic is going to die? Sonic's going to last FOREVER. So get over it. And Sonic has a good chance to be in Brawl. After SA2, it did have some flaws but that does not make it bad. I heard a lot of very bad complaints about Shadow the Hedgeghog. Like when they announced you can use guns in the game, they say "oh no! Shadow has a gun! It's the end of the world!". Well that's clearly enough. I'm being peaceful about this. And yet you people have no right to say such offensive things. The reason you say you don't like them is because, it has a bad camera view (which I kind of agree on), bad graphics, horrible gameplay, and the main reason is you hardly play them long enough to get your real results. There are two new Sonic games coming out for the DS and Xbox 360. What I suggest before and again is that you play it a while longer before you pass a lot of judgment. You never know you might be pleasantly surprised. Sega's done their best and still are doing a good job on it. But if you can't get past the premise, then that's up to you. Sonic is a great franchise, but there is something for everyone to love and I honestly don't really think that the Sonic series, the games in particular will die. It's still a good franchise and it should be. I wouldn't want it to be "dark or gritty". But nevertheless, it is for ALL ages. The stories of the Sonic Adventure games, they are fun for children to play, with bright, colorful characters and cool monsters. Let's take the basic plot of SA as an example here: A child could play it and see colourful characters fighting a big, evil water monster named Chaos, as well as a funny fat man named Eggman. Other cool things that big robots would show up along the way. That's all very well and good, children can enjoy that. An adult plays the game and sees interesting characters that happen to be colourful animals. On the surface Tails is a cute-two tailed fox, but the game also shows his insecurities, his longing to be like Sonic but also his fear of responsibility, of the idea that he might have to save the day all by himself. Knuckles looks like a brute but he's actually peaceful and noble, the sole survivor of his race who holds a sacred duty, the Master Emerald, that he values above his own life. E-102 "Gamma" is a cool robot with jet boosters and guns and everything, but he is deeply disturbed by Eggman's harsh treatment of his brothers and haunted by memories of the small bird imprisoned inside him. He goes on a mission to hunt down the other E-series robots, which involves lots of cool robot fighting and explosions. But he's not actually destroying them, he's freeing his bird friends inside, and in the end is mortally wounded and dies himself, freeing the small creature inside him so it can live a happy life. And the big, evil water creature Chaos? Not evil in the least. A guardian god of an innocent race, driven to rage and hate by the actions of the ancient echidna tribes that killed the tiny Chao in order to steal the Chaos Emeralds to secure his dominance. He destroyed their race, leaving few survivors, and was finally imprisoned in the Master Emerald to lie dormant for thousands of years, his rage and hate increasing all the time. You see, the Sonic series has something for everyone. Children can play it and enjoy it, adults can play it and enjoy it for entirely different reasons. I just don't think anyone who disses Sonic or his games is right. You're probably asking why did the Sonic X voices take over? Well the answer is simple: Deem Bristow, the original voice actor of Dr Eggman passed away. That was 2 or 3 years ago. That is the reason why Sonic X is doing it.

I like SA2 and sonic Rush, hopefully when I try out secret rings it'll be fun too. Anyway, sonic games have gone downhill after the beautiful adventure series graced our presence, but his recent games have been starting to fail a lot less. Rush was excellent, Secret rings was a step in the good direction (so I've been told) and sonic rush 2 is coming out soon. The mario and sonic olympic game will bring lots of money to the franchise, and if sonic's in brawl it'll greatly help his chances of stayin' alive. Well, seeing how well Super Mario RPG sold as mario's first RPG, naybe it'll be like that for sonic.

Sonic Phantom said:
It will not go back to 2D. I honestly don't believe that Sonic is going downhill as you proclaim. I know it has flaws in some of them. But I believe that characters are the reason why I but the Sonic games. Like the new Hedgehog, Silver. Though why Silver isn't as fast Sonic or Shadow? And Omega is an awesome robot. In my opinion he's better than Gamma. I don't care how bad the gameplay is. It may look hard at first (which it can) but if you try hard enough you'll like how it went. You think that Sonic Adventure is the only great series ever done? Well I don't believe that's true. I think that some of their games are fun. I believe they are just adding something new to the concept instead of ruining it. Like Sonic Riders, I'm not racing fan but I do like the cool concept of the Extreme Gear. It did take me a long time to figure out what I was doing but when I was on Babylon stage on the Babylon Rouge story mode I actually knew how to play it (with the help of my friend of course). I mean he didn't know what he was doing either. But I taught him how to get control of the boards and he is good at it. It's not perfect, but it's definitely not a bad game. Like Fuzion Frenzy 2, I mean it got a 2 in one of the GameInformers. I think that Fuzion Frenzy is a cool party game. Kind of like Mario Party and the minigames games from the Secret Rings.

The sonic games are great, they just need tighter controls and better camera angles. The slip up I saw was in the 360 version.
Sum guy said:
Sonic is as good as before, but he went down then up (with sonic and the secret rings). Most people rejected him at his first slip up and never came back to him. Sonic heroes was good (not great) and shadow the hedgehog only got rejected because the levels were hard.
DragonFoxCoon said:
Ok there, Sonic Phantom. Can you say "fan boy"? Don't start complaining that no one has played these games any longer than five minutes. I've played through "Shadow" and "Heroes" to the end; therefore, I KNOW that these games, especially "Shadow", didn't make the cut. In truth though, I've only played a short demo of "Riders" to think that I didn't like the controls. But, did you see me bash that game? I can't believe that you don't care about how bad a game's gameplay is. If the game doesn't play well, chances are people won't like the overall package. But still, why are you complaining? YOU'RE the one who said that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. If people like Smash Champion believe that this franchise will die if it doesn't have better games, then let him, because that's his opinion.
Sonic Phantom said:
Well I meant that if they take it a bit too harsh then I might want to say something about it. And about the bad gameplay, I think you just need practice before you get better at it. Like when E3 announced that Shadow the Hedgehog was going to be released, people were just at an extreme negativity about it. People would go "OMG! it's GTA! Let's complain before the game's even released!". That's just completely stupid. I believe that Shadow the Hedgehog is not horrible. The negativity of the Sonic fans is really starting to irritate me. Everywhere I look, the news of a new game isn't being met with happiness or optimism, just people moaning. It seems that just because a lot of people didn't like Heroes (I really enjoyed it, personally), they think that Sonic Team is past its prime. I've even heard people say that the Sonic series should just end which I think is a teensy bit harsh. In a UK Nintendo Magazine a couple of years ago, one guy was even picking holes in the Naka-san interview, saying that the wording made it look as though they were rushing the new Sonic games out because of Heroes' sales and "that's what the kiddies want". Where you can infer that, I've no idea. It seems that once they get out of their early teenage years, people turn into a prick about the things they love, as if they're trying to justify their liking of something seen as "adult". Is it too much to ask to be optimistic? Well, those idiots won't spoil it for me. I can't wait to find out more about the new games.

Bioware is one of the best game developers out there. Jade Empire was freaking awesome, NwN was a huge success, and Starwars: KotOR was really fun if you got into it. I agree that sonic games suck (except Secret Rings), but having Bioware with them will surely bring Sonic back in the spotlight. I just wish it was on the Wii as well.

All the sonics after the megadrive suck. They tried to make it too realistic. I liked it when you were killing the weird looking enemies instead of the ultra realistic piles of crap. I like seeing points coming out of the enemy's head, it's funner like that.

Even if this is good, which I highly doubt, there's no way it could revive sonic even close to its former popularity. It would need at least a couple good console sonic games to do that and the possibility of being featured in brawl might help.
Demon Aero said:
Personally, if Sonic sucked that bad right now, then how come they're still getting income? I mean please, they are somewhat going downhill but didn't Mario some? Actually all of us make mistakes. I've been a major Sonic fan for the majority of my lifespan, as well with Mario. I do disagree with some things they've been pulling with the franchise. Such as not giving enough what the fans want. They are however, slowly opening to that general option. Now, really, Sonic however did not start sucking since Sonic Adventure 2. There was Sonic Advance, had good ratings, so did some of the other series. I didn't like their installment of having Shadow's own game (pissed me when I seen it). I plan on getting Sonic and the Secret rings, even that game is quite frustrating. But I wish everyone would just stop downing a franchise that was once more popular then Mario. I like Sonic & Mario as a company who rivaled and became friends, not crap each other out who's better. If nobody agrees, I don't mind. I just happen to be someone that generally been a sonic fan for a long time, and sick of negative comments. Hope Sonic RPG does hit the big score, bioware knows what they're doing. They've spent least since 2006 working on this title, they're taking much of their time working on it I'm sure. Sega did finally make some comeback.
