Coon: I admit. I'm a Sonic nut. I was hyped when I first heard about this game. I was let down--and that's putting it lightly.
The branching story ladder was a novel idea, though I may have seen it somewhere before. Here's how it works: as you play through the levels, you can either choose to help a certain Sonic character, obey the black floaty thingy that follows you around, or neither. When you complete your mission, you'll either move up (good), down, (bad), or straight across (neutral) the ladder, therefore opening up new stages and storylines. Sounds cool, right?
WRONG! The standard 3D Sonic controls work well enough, but the aiming system sucks, and so does the camera (ho-hum on that). The level design goes from cool to horrible. The voice acting is so bad, it's funny. The--
Fox: That's enough! Leave some for us to complain about.
Coon: Sorry. My score is 3 out of 10.
Fox: First, you go up the ladder for Dark, not down, which is for Hero.
Coon: Doing this from memory is hard. I've tried to forget this game ever existed.
Dragon: Who hasn't?
Fox: And the "black floaty thingy" is Doom's eye.
Anyway, since he got basically all of the negative points, I'll try and find some positives.
Dragon: And that leaves me with what?
Fox: The day off.
Dragon: Fair enough. I'm outta here. (Spreads wings and flies away)
Fox: Destroying enemies powers up your two gauges at the top of the screen; if you hurt the soldiers, you'll fill up the red gauge, and if you kill the minions of the Black Arms, you'll fill the blue. Once completely filled, you can trade in your red for a Chaos Blast, destroying everything in the vicinity, or use your blue for Chaos Control, zipping you across the stage at breakneck speeds. Both are handy in tight spots.
Another good thing (slightly): the characters that follow you araound help you collect rings if they're close enough. Charmy, Eggman's monitor, and Doom's eye won't grab rings 'cause they float.
Last, and probably least, you get to drive vehicles. You move faster without them, but you can mow down more enemies and bust through obstacles.
With that, my well of positives has run dry. I give this a 4 out of 10. This game was just plain awful. Let's all just forget it ever happened.
Coon: Fine by me.
