Former Factor 5 President Reveals Cancelled Rogue Squadron Game for the Wii

The force wasn't strong with this one

It's a fact- During the course of a console's lifespan, many games never see the light of day. There are several reasons for this: A game proves too costly to make, the developers shift their focus to other projects, or perhaps the game is unable to attract a publisher. Nintendo systems are no exception to this rule. One just has to look at the Wii for example. Many "could have been great" games got the axe: Project H.A.M.M.E.R, The Sadness, and the recently discovered Super Mario Spikers. Now we can add another game to that list, and this one hurts the most. Why? Because the recently revealed game was going to be another entry in the critically acclaimed Star Wars: Rogue Squadron series by developer Factor 5.

In a recent interview with IGN, former Factor 5 president Julian Eggebrecht explained that the game, (titled Star War Rouge Squadron: Rogue Leaders), was going to be a remake of the 2nd and 3rd Rouge Squadron games with many new features. Among the features, there would have been a new graphic engine that would run at 60 frames per second, the support of numerous control schemes (the coolest being the use of the Wii Wheel to control your speeder bike while also using the Wii balance board pedals to control your speed), and a new lightsaber dueling mode!

Seriously, this sounds like the Star Wars game fans have been waiting for, so why was it never released? According to Eggbrecht, the financial crisis of 2008 is the culprit. During that time, many of Factor 5 publishing partners were either experiencing their own financial woes or folding. He also states that since the development time self-funded the game during the course of making it, they had no money left to publish it themselves.

I imagine many Star Wars and video game fans are disappointed that this game never saw the light of day. Below I was able to find a trailer for the game, just to give fans a glimpse of the awesomeness that could have been. May the Force be with you as you comment below.
