I think before the first boss, Sonic jumps into a pit of cooling lava that's hardening enough so that it's safe to walk on. Perhaps he saw a secret passage to Tails down there and then Robotnik catches him on the way down. I don't think he rescues Sonic at all! People just don't understand.
