It says on the site "The character-selection screen is still a secret!" which would mean that yes, it is part of what the menu looks like, but it's also blurred. No point in even noticing the fact it's part of the menu. The thing I really care about is the fact you can change button configurations and transfer those changes to your Wiimote for when you go to a friend's house. Today's update was probably the best yet. I hated the same button configuration that sucked horribly (all the buttons that jumped was the worst part).
