Some bad news for the Wii today. It turns out there will be no online play in 3rd party games for the Wii until early 2007. The reason for this is simply that Nintendo won't be supplying the necessary SDK code to developers allowing them to use online functionality until then.
Nintendo's motivation for this is unknown. Perhaps the SDK isn't ready yet, or it could be they need the time to test the online system with their own games. All of this means that none of the launch titles will be capable of online play, with Red Steel being a possible exception since it's being developed with close support from Nintendo. Any other online Wii titles we see this year will likely be from Nintendo themselves.
Ideally we would have liked to see a good selection of online games from the start. Then again a few months is not long to wait, if it results in a better online system we here at WW are happy to wait.

Well that kind of sucks. But I am still a bit confused, when the online games start coming out can we just start playing them online or do we have to purchase/download something first?
splintercell4ever said:
Not a big deal, most people will get it for christmas and than wait a couple of days later for 2007.
Killer Ape said:
Bull crap Nintendo. Bull crap!
maxone23 said:
Aw hell.
some gamer said:
I'm getting it maybe when it comes out, that sucks but there won't be any multiplayer games that I will buy.
Wiils on the bus said:
Smash Bros, one of the only online games worth playing so far comes out in '07 anyway.
wii fan said:
Luke you'll need a router to connect to the Internet. I don't know if it can use the Nintendo wifi USB connector though.
Spex said:
This is probably for the reason mentioned above. Online support should be limited at first so Nintendo gets its online system sorted out. Less we forget the shortages on Metroid Prime Hunters servers? Trust me. We're better off waiting a bit for the best experience.
Killer Ape said:
So does that mean the Wii won't have wiiconnect24 in it, and the 07 ones will? Or just online games will come out in 07 like Red Steel.
go nintendo said:
The only ones I'm looking forward to are Red Steel and SSBB so it doesn't really matter. I will have beaten single player before going online, so I would prefer it to be like this. Now it will be better than before!
Riley said:
So does this mean we can't use the virtual console or we can't use online play?
Chuf said:
Did anyone read the whole thing? It said no third party games will have online until '07. The three first/second party launch titles aren't online, but any first or second party games released in '06 can be online.
Lickwid said:
Simply means single player and split screen untill 07.
Someone said:
Noooo! That stinks, no online mp3c or rs until 07. Or they might not even have online play!
Luke said:
Thanks 'wii fan' but I have never bought a console that is Live before, so can someone just tell me how it works/what I need and stuff like that.
ganondorfrules said:
So is the wi-fi cable internet or wireless? I'd rather finish SSBB before I start online so I know which character out of them all will give me the advantage.
mwiiamoto said:
That does suck but during those months I will just destroy Zelda Twilight Princess!
tabsina said:
Sounds reasonable enough to wait. Think about it, October/November release for wii. Give it 2/3 months and we have online 3rd party games. Nothing to worry about.
M!! said:
Call of duty 3?! That beats the whole purpose of me buying cod3.
splintercell4ever said:
Who cares if it's not online? Just play multiplayer with your friends. That's more fun than playing some average schmo from another state.
some gamer said:
Now people can prepare to play Online and get ready.
Darunia106 said:
This means that games that are produced by Nintendo, like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, will have online capabilities when the Wii comes out. It's third-party developed games like Call of Duty 3 and perhaps Red Steel that will suffer.
Luke said:
Ok, I guess it's not a big deal. We will only have to wait a couple of months. The games will still be very fun without live for a while.
Uforia77 said:
This could be a good thing, more time to practise plus it'll be well worth the wait!
WiiFan15 said:
Doesn't affect me, the only game I need online for is Super Smash Bros Brawl and that's coming out in 07 anyway. Besides during the wait we got Zelda, Metroid and so many others.
tvtech77 said:
This is Nintendo's first real shot at online and they want to get the feel of it. Just look at the x-box launch, live was not there for a good 6 months so no big deal.
600exact said:
Well, I'm getting Red Steel first obviously.
Koen van Beeck said:
What are you talking about Someone? MP3C isn't a 3rd party game and -will- be able to go online from start. That's what I gathered at least.
turd said:
In a magazine it said CoD had special wii online features.
jackatrock said:
That would mean that Super smash bros Brawl and Spore will not be able to go online, well that sucks! I was looking forward to that. I wonder why they can not make it this year.
PHiRE said:
Jack neither of those games are coming out until 2007 anyway.
WiiFan15 said:
And SSBB isn't 3rd party.
Unknown said:
Man, I guess I'm not going to play DBZ:Tenkaichi 2 online.
Joe Teh Laugh King said:
Even if it's not online till 07 we'll have Zelda:TLP and practise on online games. Besides the good online games won't be coming out until 07 anyway, like SSBB.
kiki itachi said:
WHAT THE HELL! No online till 2007 c'mon nintendo, why are you pissing me off? Stop trying to break my friendship with you Nintendo, please change your mind. You don't want to make me angry Nintendo.
ShigMan said:
Well, no online until 2007 should be no problem. I mean with wiiconect24, getting online in 2007 for a 3rd party game released in 2006 should be a simple matter of a patch download from Nintendo. Don't sweat the online loss, it will all fix itself in good time.
Chees502 said:
Hey if it makes it better and less likely for cheaters, go for it Nintendo. I have been waiting for this console for about 2 years, what's a couple of months without online play?
Chrome said:
Will you guys be patient? Especially kiki itachi!
Jimmy said:
To play a Virtual Console game you either buy a Wiipoints card or get one off the net. Use that card to go onto your Wii and then go to the Wii Shop on the Mii Channels. Purchase game (500points for NES; 800 for SNES; 1000 for N64). Access any time for the rest of your life from the Mii Channel screen.
Splintercell4ever said:
Guys the reason you're so pissed off about no online is because you have no friends to play with.
milkman844 said:
I really don't mind it. Gives you time to play single player modes and practise. And some of you don't seem to know, but Metroid Prime 3 was delayed and is going to get released in 07.
kiki itachi said:
I'm sorry I just got a little angry, maybe you guys are right. After all the online games aren't coming out until 2007 so I'm sorry *hugging my gamecube*.
wii-mote dude said:
Ah, I don't mind. Super Smash Bros is Nintendo, so is Zelda. No problem there, but wait. METROID WAS DELAYED?!? NOO! *melts*.
FoolKilla said:
This is what we should have expected in a new-coming Nintendo console. They need all the time they can get until they realize how foolish they were in using those stupid friend codes to "make their online gaming safe". This just ruins the point of playing online, and not only that, but Mario Kart DS online was just horrible. Long time to get people connected and most of the time it was 1on1 because of the crappy one-at-a-time friend connection.
trmn8r said:
This isn't that bad, But I wish I could know if they are at least going to release a patch later for games like COD3 to be online. I mean that's like half of what makes the game. FPS titles I believe are what's going to make Wii amazing! Consoles have always sucked with fps compared to mouse and keyboard PC. Wii can change that. But if they can't go online with COD3 and Red Steel etc. Not even with a downloadable patch in 07, I think that will greatly hurt them. It also makes me second-guess getting COD3.
Scooby!_Jew said:
That last sentence gave me some comfort. I agree with Wii's World completely as far as "if it results in a better online system we are happy to wait". Also the fact that Red Steel has a possibility of being an online game gives me some comfort and happiness (it's #2 on my wish list). Any time Nintendo delays something, it always turns out better than their competitors, so help that put your mind at ease. I'm sure WiiConnect24 is going to be better than EggsBox Live or whatever the hell PS3 has.
Mikeb said:
So when online play comes out for red steel or madden, will I have to buy a separate piece to play? I already have router. And when will we know when online play is ready?
gp said:
You can wirelesly connect Wii to the internet without any attachments.

GOSH! Nintendo you make me so impatient, I can't wait any longer for online multiplayer. Please hurry.
