In an interview with Forbes, President Satoru Iwata gave some insight on the development of Nintendo's next home console after Wii.
"We're always preparing for the next hardware. We are under development. But the hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games, so every hardware needs some revolutionary features. This time around, it happened to be we had a revolutionary user interface. Will it be the same for the next generation? I really can't tell. It's natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different. If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it's going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again".
Of course this is in the distant future, but which direction will Big N take for the Wii's successor? I would expect HD graphics is a given. Better online gaming? Mind control? The truth is out there!

Wii's World is not officially affiliated with Nintendo! (but they wish we were).

Actually, I think that they have the mind control part checked off. Just look at Wii sales.

I really hope they aren't making a new console, I'm still having a blast from the Wii. Hopefully they're going to wait a few years until the next console releases.

Yoshlee it takes years of development, "in development" doesn't mean coming soon. Wii has minimum of 3 plus years left. I want dual wiimote 2s Wii motion plus built in and both with speakers and rumble. Dual 3d mouse/pointers also one with analog, other with d-pad and some kind of 3d visual enhancement and maybe thought control or 3d head tracking.

Kind of soon to be talking about a new console isn't it?

I would agree that HD graphics is a given, as well as improved online gameplay. I also expect the big and to fine tune motion controls and pointing. I can imagine there's a way to flash patterns of dots on the screen so fast and random that the player doesn't notice, but done so in a way that the sensor bar is eliminated and pointing becomes gitter-free accurate. I would expect the remote setup to be very similar to what's already on the Wii, plus a wireless Nunchuck. The system works very well, and it could scare off potential casual buyers/system renewers if the next console's controller is totally different. What would be cool: find a way to turn the A-button into a 2nd joystick. Maybe a mechanism would twist it and the a button would pop up to reveal a joystick. That would be sweet. Nintendo has seen how important revolutionary features are, but I think they've also seen how much of a problem it can be to have a console that's technologically behind the competition. It is hard to imagine the Wii being any more successful that it already is, but can you imagine the sales if it had HD graphics AND motion controls?

I don't think that the next console is going to be good because I found a pattern in Nintendo's system history. First there was NES which was revolutionary because you could have video games and play them at home. Then there was SNES which was sort of the same thing as NES. Later came the N64 which was also revolutionary because it was the first 3D system. Then came Gamecube, and we all know how bad Nintendo messed up there. They ended up just increasing the graphics. Then came the Wii, with its revolutionary control. Think about it, Nintendo skips a generation when it comes to gaming revolutions.

This is cool, I've been dreaming about the next Nintendo console. And Yoshlee chill, they will wait at least four years after the wii's launch. So 2010 or 2011.

This makes me wonder about Wii's World. If the new console comes out per se in 5 years, will the name of Wii's World change as well?
B Darius said:
Let's just hope it'll play Wii & GameCube games, be as good as the 360, and will have a decent name.

I lol'd at Master Foot's comment. Yes, HD graphics. And online that didn't suck would be nice.

The next-gen Nintendo console after the Wii won't hit until late 2012 so everyone today still has lots of fun playing the Wii.
Nintendo4ever said:
Of course they're going to do that! I think the DS is going to be the first to get a successor because it is older than the Wii.

I imagine that there will be a redefining of the whole motion control thing. But I can't honestly see something that the player would be wearing like motion sensitive gloves or helmet or something. I do think, however, that Nintendo may be a bit a bit worried about how they will make a new console and not just a Wii with new features (a la xbox). only time will tell.

We need more Wii games, not a new console.

It can't be that far in the future. They've probably started concept designs a while ago.

More memory, the 2 serious comments from above, erm. Well those are the only flaws of Wii I can really think of, so I just hope that Nintendo perfect them, and we may have a perfect console.

I thought the Gamecube was pretty good.

If it's like Nintendo's it's the last success, because all the 8th and 9th consoles will be the new Gamecube/64 aka "failed". So long as it has a hard drive that's 200 GB and a higher media I'm good. I only wish Sammy SEGA was in on this.

Better graphics along with blu-ray movie playback support, an Xbox-live like online system, and a hard drive would be the only things I'd want on a new Nintendo system.

I own all five (Wii, DS, Xbox 360, PS3, PSP), and I'd be quick to buy the Wii's successor, due to the fact it was so inexpensive and is an absolute joy to play (and only 1 SKU!). As for Microsoft's and Sony's systems, I might only get the latter. The PS3 was not worth the $750+. But! Neither can compare to Nintendo's classic IPs.
