Sheik is Female

Confirmed by Nintendo

There has been debate since the dawn of... well, Ocarina of Time as to whether Sheik is male or female. Well, the call was finally answered recently after Polygon asked Nintendo the question directly.

"The definitive answer is that Sheik is a woman - simply Zelda in a different outfit."

... Little shock there, but it does disprove a lot of theories regarding the topic, which coincidentally can be seen here.
