Game developers Nicalis obviously have a passion for old-styled 2D platformers, particularly ones where the main character wears a hat. Their next title appearing on the 3DS eShop (and hopefully Wii U's eShop after that) is 1,001 Spikes, which is a remake of an Xbox Live game called "Aban Hawkins & the 1000 Spikes".

Like La-Mulana, 1,001 Spikes features an Indiana Jones type explorer, making his way through hazard-filled platforming areas. This game really pays homage to the 8-bit era with its high level of difficulty and comical grammar, as seen in this fun trailer:
